HOW TO BECOME A SEALED SERVANT

To become a sealed servant one must be sealed by Beloved INGKONG. And to receive the Holy Sealing, one must be a baptized catholic or orthodox Christian – this is the pre-requisite for all the other Holy Sacraments of the Church. By principle and practice, each man who wishes to become a sealed servant must be in the state of grace; his act is born of free will, believes in the doctrine of Beloved INGKONG, and understands the duties and responsibilities associated with receiving the spirit-seal. Thus, it is advised that a desiring person should join or associate himself with the Block Rosary of the sealed servants, attend Holy Masses officiated by the clergies of the Apostolic Catholic Church, attend one of Beloved INGKONG’s ‘Ganapan’ and hear His ‘Mensahe’ – these activities will prepare him in becoming a sealed servant. It is also helpful if he associated himself with a pious and obedient sealed servant and asked him questions about the holy faith.

The candidate should pass through ‘Comprohan’, a usually overnight gathering designed to instruct the would-be sealed servants of what it is to become a ‘tinatakan’, prior to the ‘Ganapan of Juan Bautista’, the baptism for repentance. Those who passed the test and baptism of Juan Bautista are confirmed to be worthy, by the holy water, to proceed to the next stage and summit of the process – the Baptism of Fire and Spirit by Beloved INGKONG – the “Holy Sealing”.

Beloved INGKONG searches the heart and soul of man and woman, thus He knows who is really worthy for such a great blessing. Some were denied, or delayed, the reception of the holy seal. Oftentimes these are due to some un-confessed mortal sins like abortion, witchcraft, and murder among others. These are sins which generally fall under the violation of any or all of the Ten Commandments. They were not absolutely denied the holy seal; the door will still and always be opened for them. All they have to do is amend their lives, be converted, confess, do penance and sacrifices in reparation for their sins.

Abortion and other Crimes
Those who committed abortion were asked to confess and do penance for their sins by praying the 15 mysteries of the Holy Rosary with arms outstretched in the form of a cross while holding candles [on both hands] and attend daily masses. These should be done for thirty (30) consecutive days for each aborted human being. This applies to everybody who consented to the commission or accomplishment of this great crime; this includes the mother, the husband or the man, and the doctor.

Witchcraft
Those who practiced witchcraft prior to the holy sealing and still have somebody suffering from their spells or rituals must remove, dispel and nullify the spells that caused other people’s suffering – be it physically or mentally. Those who received amulet, talisman or occult literatures such as satanic bible, Masonic books and similar items which are contrary to the Catholic and Orthodox Faith are asked and required to renounce and surrender these items to the feet of Beloved INGKONG or to the appointed person of the Church prior to the holy sealing. These items must be exorcised and burned in the name of the Holy Trinity, of the Lord Jesus Christ and Beloved INGKONG. And for other sins, Beloved INGKONG pronounces His judgment and the penance to the person on how he can repair his sins.

The Holy Sealing, Spirit-seal, and the Sealed Servant

The Holy Sealing is the “Baptism of Fire and Spirit” prophesied by St. John the baptizer (Matthew 3:11). It is where and when, Beloved INGKONG sprinkles and washes the person’s spirit with the water of life (Ezekiel 36:25); He renews, restores and strengthens the person’s conscience, fills the consecrated space within him with abundant graces and writes on his forehead the sign of the cross (Ezekiel 9:4; Apocalypse 3:12; 7:3) with the last drop of the blood of Jesus Christ in Calvary (Hebrew 9:12,14,22), availed by Brother Florentine during his encounter with Beloved INGKONG at the seminary, for the forgiveness of his sins committed from his last good confession (and those forgotten ones since childhood, or the age of reason, and were not confessed) “sins he will no longer take an account in the day of judgment” (Message of Beloved INGKONG); He is reborn and is a now a new creation like a newborn babe (John 3:5-7; 2 Corinthian 5:17); And becomes a “throne” of a blessed spirit whom Beloved INGKONG brings down from the heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22-23) and enthrones in him (Apocalypse 3:12) who becomes his spiritual guide and helper called “Spirit-seal” - the guarantee of his salvation and eternal life - being the fulfillment of the words of the prophets Joel and Ezekiel (Joel 2:28; Ezekiel 11:19-20;36:26-27) in addition to his Guardian Angel and the “indwelling spirit”.

The Spirit-seal is the spirit that cooperates with the man, the one that reminds, teaches, shows and reveals truths in man’s spirit in the form of intuition, “guts” feelings and through other special, though supernatural, manifestations. The Spirit-seal indwells the man [in his physical body] and cohabits with his own spirit such that there are two spirits that dwells in his faculties [as a person i.e. personality]; and with regards to who will have the upper hand depends on the will of the person or the urgency of the divine intervention when his eternal salvation is at stake.

After the Holy Sealing you will be called in your new title and name. You will be known, more so in the spiritual realm, as “Sealed Servant”, “Tinatakan”, “Binasbasan” or through the name of his Spirit-seal like APO. The name or word APO is an abbreviation of the Latin ACCEPTAVIT POTESTATIS OMNIPOTENTI.

An APO is a throne of the spirit of one of the saints produced of the Eastern or Western Christianity (Hebrew 12:22-23) from places like Jerusalem [Israel], Antioch [Syria], Alexandria [Egypt], Avila, Rome [Italy], Constantinople [Istanbul, Turkey], Moscow [Russia], Sienna [Italy], Padua [Italy],Thessalonica [Macedonia], Malabar [Kerala, India], and Ephesus [Turkey] among others.

In a sense, all sealed servants of Beloved INGKONG may be generalized under the name APO, for it means person who received power and grace from the Omnipotent God.

To the spirit-seals belong the spirits of the patriarchs, saints, martyrs, confessors, and virgins. In the early years of the public ministry of Beloved INGKONG, He enthroned the spirits of the Patriarchs like Moses and Aaron; the spirit of Saint Expeditus among others. There are about hundreds of thousands to million martyrs in the Eastern Christianity alone, not to mention the many saints of the Western Christianity, who were either beheaded, burned at the stake, or fed to the blood-thirsty lions of the Coliseum in Rome. The spirits of the early Christians were enthroned by Beloved INGKONG to the sealed servants in fulfillment of His promise, when He was with His Disciples as our Lord Jesus Christ, to those who eat His flesh and drink His blood – ‘he will raised them up in the last days’ (John 6:1-34,35-59).

The sealed servant is the fulfillment of the Lord’s promise to the early saints of Christianity, they are raised from the spirit world, from the heavenly Jerusalem, re-clothed them with the flesh of the living, i.e. the sealed servants, to inspire them to holiness and courageous faith, and to wage battle against the powers of darkness; whose evil spirits have enthroned – possessed – poor and wretched souls. These days are the battle of those who are possessed by the holy spirits and those possessed of the evil ones. Saints are not only those who were proclaimed by the Church and we know the names of, there are countless martyrs who gave up their lives for the sake of the holy faith.

Beloved INGKONG made known and enthroned to His young sealed servants, for the reason of their childlikeness and purity, the following angels as spirit-seals: HIJAS DE MARIA, QUERUBIN, SERAFINES, ANGELITO, and ANGELITA- these are called ‘Auxiliaries’. While the psychologically-matured and physically-able bodies are enthroned the APO, MUSKITEROS, SIETE (7) ARKANGHELES, KUATRO (4) BASTON, and KUATRO (4) ALAS.

The name HIJAS DE MARIA can be literally translated as ‘Daughters of Mary’. These are holy spirits within the rank of first choir of angels, they are the angels specially appointed to assist and serve the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The ALAS are powers representing the Four Holy Evangelists namely Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and representing as well the four elements namely Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.

The BASTON are the powers that guards the four cardinal directions (North, South, East and West). They are the spirits that encircles the throne of God on earth such as the Holy Covenant, St. Maria Virginia, and now, the Holy Patriarch. They encircle the throne for the purpose of protecting it with their potent'baston'.

THE MUSKITEROS are the thrones of the horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The SIETE ARKANGHELES are Holy Archangels MICHAEL, RAPHAEL, GABRIEL, URIEL or Auriel, SEALTIEL, BARACHIEL, and JUDIEL.

The ANGELITO and ANGELITA are the angels of the same rank as the QUERUBIN, SERAFINESand Hijas de Maria except that their purity and child-likeness fits them to be enthroned to children.

In the past, Beloved INGKONG, through the Holy Covenant, also enthroned a class of spirit-seal called LEGIONARIES to the sealed servants; but after some time He recalled and returned them to heavenly Jerusalem. These latter spirit-seals are Spirits of the order within the hierarchy of the Angels. There are, as well, DOSE (12) APOSTOLES, MARIAS and JUANS; these are the “Spirit Escorts” of Beloved INGKONG who once ministered to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Blessed Mother and John the Baptizer. The MARIAS are for the Covenant, St. Maria Virginia, and the JUANS are for the Patriarch, John Florentine.

Note: Beloved INGKONG through the Holy Patriarch, aside from the clergies, ordained, empowered and mandated the 7 ARKANGHELES, JUANS, and the 12 APOSTOLES to administer the Holy Sacraments as per His message in the first quarter of the year 2008.

PROCEDURES

You should express your desire to be sealed to an APO or Auxiliary who will assist you along the way.
Receive Holy Sacrament as required
Fill up Registration Form and submit to the person in charge/office.
Attend and participate in night-long study called Comprohan wherein you will know initially the foundation doctrines of Beloved Ingkong and His Church
Attend and pray during the Ganapan ng Mahal na Ingkong through the Patriarch
If you are worthy, you will receive your Holy Seal.

Now as member of the Church you are encouraged to fulfill your obligations:

Pray the Holy Rosary, the Angelus, Pagninilay, Scripture Reading and Reflection
Attend Holy Mass celebrated by ACC-OMHS or ACC-OMJF clergies
Attend Feast Days celebration in EDSA or in Sacrifice Valley
If you are currently employed: support the church financially by your tithes and donations
Share and Proclaim the messages of Beloved Ingkong through your own life example, personal sanctifications.
Keep in touch with your District/ Regional officer and the assigned priest/bishop in your area.

Narito mga kapatid ang ilang larawan na nagpapakita at nagpapatunay na totoo na walang ibang gagamitin na ang MAHAL NA INGKONG bukod sa ALAM NA NANG LAHAT NA GINAGAMIT NA BUHAY AT KASAMA PA NATIN ANG BANAL NA LUKLUKAN - WALANG IBA KUNDI ANG BANAL NA PATRIYARKA.

Winika ng Mahal na Ingkong sa bibig mismo ng Banal na Luklukan na wala nang ibang gagamitin at iyan ay di natin pinasisinungalingan o pinasusubalian dahil bukod sa Kanya at sa Patriyarka wala nang iba pang ginagamit ang Mahal na Ingkong. Mahirap ba iyong unawain?

Di baga natin nauunawa na kaya nga ang tawag sa Sta Maria Virginia ay BANAL NA LUKLUKAN dahil siya ay LUKLUKAN at si Apo Juan naman ay BANAL NA PATRIYARKA. Iisa lang ang LUKLUKAN ng Mahal na Ingkong iyan ay walang iba kundi ang Sta Maria Virginia, Iisa din lamang ang kanyang PATRIYARKA iyan ay walang iba kundi si Dr Juan Florentino. MAYROON PA BANG IBA?

Dito sa unang larawan, sino ang nakatayo, ang Mahal na Ingkong ba o ang Patriyarka?

Dito sa ikalawang larawan, sino ang nakatayo at nakaharap sa tao? Mahal na Ingkong ba o ang Patriyarka? Nasa harapan ng Mahal na Ingkong ang mga Apostoles, mga kapariang OMHS. Nariyan ding nakaluhod ang mga tumalikod ng taong 2006 at nagsipagtayo ng sariling kanila. Ngayon, ginagamit ba ng Mahal na Ingkong ang Patriyarka noon o hindi? Buhay pa at kasama natin ang Banal na Luklukan? Totoo po ba o hindi? Tinanong ba sila ng Mahal na Ingkong na noon ay nasa Sta Maria Virginia kung Dapat ba o Hindi gamitin si Apo Juan o ang Patriyarka? TINANONG BA SILA, SINANGGUNI BA SILA? KANINONG KALOOBAN ANG DAPAT NA MASUNOD?

Mayroon ba isa man sa mga tumalikod ang kahit isang beses ay pinag suot ng Mahal na Ingkong ng damit ng Nazareno at pinagpasan ng krus NI MINSAN? Magkaiba ang PASAN NG KRUS sa BUHAT ng Krus. Dalawa lamang ang NAGPASAN NG KRUS, ang Sta Maria Virginia at ang Patriyarka at matapos nila sa bandang huli lahat ay nagbubuhat na lamang ng krus - mga kaparian, mga apostoles, mga alas, mga baston atbp.

WALA NANG GAGAMITIN BUKOD SA ALAM NA NANG LAHAT NA GINAGAMIT NA IYAN AY DALAWANG TAO LAMANG, UNA AY ANG STA MARIA VIRGINIA, IKALAWA AY ANG PATRIYARKA? WALA NANG IBA.

Sa mga nakaluhod at kasunod ng Mahal na Ingkong nariyan ang mga tumalikod noong 2006? Mga nakasuot ng sagradong vestment ng ACC-OMHS. Ngayon ito ay hindi na nila suot? Nasaan ang kanilang mga sagradong vestment na binendisyunan ng Mahal na Ingkong sa katauhan ng Sta Maria Virginia? Sino ang kusang loob na tumalikod at naghubad ng karangalang iyon? At kung sila ngayon ay may kasuotang hindi ACC-OMHS sino ang nagsuot sa kanila niyon? Mahal na Ingkong o ang Sta Maria Virginia ba? Sino ang tumalikod, sino ang hindi nanatili, sino ang nang-iwan, sino ang humiwalay?

Kilalanin ninyo mabuti ang mga nasa larawan kung sino sino? Ang pangyayari ba noong 2006 hanggang ngayon ay paris ng pangyayari nang hulihin ang P.Hesukristo ng mga sundalong Romano sa pangunguna ni Judas Iscariote kasama ng mga punong pari, na kung saan ang mga apostoles na lahat ay nagsipanakbuhan at iniwan mag-isa ang Kristo? Marahil ay hindi pareho, marahil ay pareho. Pareho kung matapos ang kanilang pag-iwan ay nagsipanumbalik sila at nag sisi at tinanggap sila ng Panginoon. Marahil ay hindi pareho dahil kung hanggang sa kanilang kamatayan ay nagmatigas sila at hindi nagbagong loob - mamamatay sila sa kanilang kasalanan.

Hindi madali ang maging isa ama o Patriyarka. Mainam pa ang mga Inhenyero, mga doktor, mga abogado may paaralan at pamantasan subalit ang maging isang ama ay higit pa sa mga nabanggit na karera o propesyon, at kahit na higit pa sa mga iyan, ito ang gampanin na walang paaralan, walang pamantasan para makapagsanay. Walang sinoman ang nakapamili ng magiging ama? Walang taong isinilang ang bago ipanganak ay namili ng kanyang magiging magulang. Kung ito man ay maari na tayo ay makapamili marahil wala nang taong ipapanganak sa mundo sapagkat sinong ama at magulang ang perpekto at bubuo ng lahat ng iyong inaasam?

Di baga kaya nga isinama ng Diyos sa Sampung Utos ang "Mahalin at igalang ang inyong Ina at Ama." at ito ang kautusan na agad na may pangakong pagpapala. Igalang at mahalin hindi hatulan at pag-aralan. Ang magulang ay hindi pinag aaralan sila ay minamahal. Di baga iniuutos at kasabihan ng matatanda nang una na ang mga magulang ay ang pangalawang diyos ng tao sa lupa? Alisin mo ang kautusang iyan, sino ang diyos mo ngayon - di baga ang iyong sariling kalooban?

Ang pagkadapa ay bahagi ng buhay ng isang tinatakan, bahagi ng buhay ng isang binyagan. Inihalimbawa ng Mahal na Ingkong ang isa pang bahagi ng ating buhay tinatakan - ANG PAGBANGON MATAPOS ANG PAGKADAPA. Ang isang tao pag nadapa ang kanyang mukha ay sa lupa nakaharap, dumi ang nakikita ng kanyang mata, lupa o dumi ang kanyang naamoy o nalalanghap. Kung mananatili siya sa gayong posisyon at di niya itataas ang kanyang mga mata sa langit, sa mas mataas sa lupa, sa mas mataas sa kanyang pinagkadapaan - may lulungkot pa ba? Ang dumi ay nariyan, ang baho ay nariyan subalit nariyan din naman ang maganda at malinis. Di baga maaaring sa marumi at malinis kunin mo ang malinis at iwaksi ang marumi? Di baga maaari na tanggapin mo ang maganda at iwasan mo ang pangit? Di baga maaari na sa daming pagkain na nakahain ay iyong masarap na at malusog ang iyong kunin at huwag na ang bulok at sira?

"Mga anak, ilagay nyo sa krus na ito ang inyong mga kasalanan at papasanin ko para sa inyo." - Mahal na INGKONG

Bukod sa sagradong kasuotan ng kapariang ACC-OMHS mayron ba kayong nakikita pang ibang kasuotang pari na nariyan? Mayroon pa bang iba? Ngayon, anong kasuotan, sinong may tanda at kapangyarihan at mandato ang inyong sinusundan? Kilala kaya ng Mahal na Ingkong at ng Sta Maria Virginia ang inyong mga pinuno at mga kaparian? Napag isipan mo ba ito?

Ang pagpapasan ng Krus ay iba sa pagbubuhat ng Krus. Dalawa lamang sa kasaysayan ng mga tinatakan ang kinikilala ng Mahal na Ingkong at may pahintulot niya at ng Banal na Luklukan na magpasan ng krus - ang Sta Maria Virginia at ang Banal na Patriyarka - wala nang iba. Ang larawan sa itaas ay pagbubuhat ng krus at hindi pagpapasan ng krus.

Pag-nilayang nyong mainam mga kapatid, suriin ninyong mabuti. Timbangin ninyong mainam. Dumalangin kayo sa MNI sa alas-dose ng gabi, magnilay kayo, tanungin ninyo siya, ialis ninyo sa inyo ang paghatol at isantabi nyo muna ang mga galit ninyo na hindi kayo ang naglagay sa inyong dibdib kundi ang mga tumalikod sa MNI, sa Simbahan niya, at sa Patriyarka - habang may panahon pa at kasama natin ang Patriyarka.

Ang salitang Patriyarka ay isang titulo, posisyon, at karangalan na ipinapatungkol sa AMA at PINUNO ng isang kalipunan ng tao na may sistema, patakaran at mga alituntunin o batas na pinaiiral, napapailalim sa isang pananaw at misyon.

Ang Patriyarka ay tulad sa isang upuan o trono o luklukan.At dahil isang trono ng kapangyarihan at karangalan isa lamang ang maaaring makaupo o makaluklok dito at iyon ay walang iba kundi ang isang hinirang o pinili mula sa karamihan sa pamamagitan ng itinalagang sistema ng pagpili at paghirang o kaya ay nang pagtatalaga o paghirang ng kahalili ng aalis na kasalukuyang Patriyarka.

Sa ating kasalukuyang panahon, 1992 - 2011 AD, ang ating Patriyarka ay walang iba kundi ang minamahal at iginagalang ng Simbahang Apostolic Catholic Church, Dr. Florentino Teruel, anak ng nag iisang Matriyarka at Pundadora ng Simbahan Sta Maria Virginia.

Si Dr Florentino Teruel ay ang Patriyarka at darating ang panahon sa kalooban ng Mahal na Ingkong ang katungkolan, karangalan, mga karapatan ng pagiging Patriyarka ay kanyang isasalin, ililipat sa hihiranging kahalili niya. Sa pamamagitan nito, ang kaisahan at katatagan ng Simbahan ay mapananatili at maiingatan hanggang sa mga susunod na salin lahi.

Ang Apostolic Catholic Church ay ang tangi at nag-iisang Simbahan na dalawa ang Krus na nagpapahiwatig na sa Simbahang ito pinag-iisa at nagkakaisa ang dalawang tradisyon, East and West, ng Simbahan ng Panginoong Hesukristo - ang ONE HOLY CATHOLIC and APOSTOLIC CHURCH.

ANG PATRIYARKA ANG EHE O AXIS AT SENTRO

Ang Patriyarka ang sentro at ehe o axis ng Simbahan ng Mahal na Ingkong sa lupa - ang Simbahang naglalakbay, ang Apostolic Catholic Church. Ang axis o ehe ay paris ng gulong ng bisekleta na kung saan ang mga rayos ay nakakonekta at ang axis naman sa batalya ng bisekleta. Paris din ng araw na siyang axis o sentro ng mga planetas. Ang Patriyarka bilang visible head ay ang visible axis of unity ng simbahan sa lupa.

Axis sapagkat siya ang siguradong koneksyon ng Simbahan at ng mga tinatakan sa MANDATO ng tagapag-tatag nito - si Dr Florentine Teruel, Sta Maria Virginia at Mahal na Ingkong.

Ang Mandato ng Patriyarka ay buhat at mula sa Mahal na Ingkong at Sta Maria Virginia. Hindi ito ginawa sa kanino mang iba.

Ang Patriyarka ay isang institusyon na dapat ingatan, ipagtanggol at ipagsanggalang. Ito ay mananatili hanggang sa katapusan ng mga panahon hanggang sa pagbabagong anyo ng langit at ng lupa, iyan ay pangakong binitawan ng Mahal na Ingkong sa atin sa labi man ng Sta Maria Virginia o ng Patriyarka.

Nitong nagdaang mga araw, may umuupasala at umaatake sa institusyong ito at sa kasalukuyang nakaupo sa karangalang ito. Binabato at tangkang dungisan ang pagiging Patriyarka at ang pagkatao o personalidad ni Apo Juan Bautista (Dr Florentino Teruel). Ang pagtatanggol sa Patriyarka ay isa sa mga katungkolan ng bawat hinirang at kasapi ng Simbahan. Ang pagtatanggol na ito ay hindi lamang ngayon kundi sa lahat ng panahon mag-iba iba man ang maupo at mahalal na Patriyarka.

Ang mga uupo sa katungkolan ng pagiging Patriyarka ay darating at aalis, mapapalitan subalit ang luklukang ito ay mananatili maging ang lahat ng karangalan at karapatan.

Mahaba ang email niya at binura ko ang maraming mga salita niya na wala sa hulog at puro below the belt. Dun tayo sa issue na mas mahalaga at may pakinabang ngayon at sa mga darating na panahon.

Sumagot sa FB Posting ang Patriyarka, di pa nagtatagal ng ilang minuto, binura na ng admin ng group. Sumagot ang binabatikos para ihayag at ipagtanggol ang kanyang side binura. One side lang ba? Paano makapaninimbang kung ang isang parte lang ang lalagyan mo ng bigat at timbang, pano ang balanse.

At mula sa pagiging Open access ay ginawang Secret ang group page. Bakit ililihim? Di ba mainam at commendable na mabasa ng mga tao ng mga tinatakan ang katuwiran ng magkabilang panig at mula doon ay magkaroon ng sariling isip at pagpapasya kung ano ang tama ano ang matuwid ano ang wasto. Ito ay talakayan at pag aaral hindi kagalitan o diskusyong walang pupuntahan. Kung tunay nating hanap ang matuwid at katotohanan - magpalitan tayo ng katuwiran. Kaya lumapit para matatakan at magkaroon ng banal galing sa langit. Inaralan nyo ng kung paano magalit sa ACC at sa PAtriyarka dahil iyon ang kailangan nila malaman para lumayo sila sa ACC at sa Patriyarka HINDI BA? Dahil kung ang kabutihan ng ACC ng OMHS at ng Patriyarka ang malalaman nila NATURAL di na sila sasama sa inyo hindi ba?

Kailangang diligan ng kasinungalingan at hinabing kwento ang itinanim na galit at inggit sa puso at kalooban ng mga tao para makapanatili sila sa grupo ninyo.Binatikos ninyo ang Simbahan ng Mahal na Ingkong, may sumagot at nangatuwiran inalis ninyo at binura at itinira ninyo ay ang sarili ninyong mga salita O di ba lumalabas na talagang ayaw nyo malaman ng tao ang kaliwa at kanan ng issue.

Pero hanggang kailan masusustinihan ng gayong sistema ang pananampalataya? INGKONG ay pag-ibig lagi nyong wika pero mabanggit lang na kayo ay napasasakop sa hindi dapat sumakop at di dapat mangulo sa inyo nagliliyab na kalooban nyo.

Ang tindahan ay hindi Simbahan. Ayun ang simbahan dun gumaganap ang MNI hindi sa tindahan? Di ba ninyo iyon naiisip?

Umaakyat kayo ng lupang banal sa tindahan lamang kayo pupunta samantalang nariyan ang Katedral.

Di kayo makapasok sapagkat ayaw nyo pang ibaba ang inyong kalooban, ayaw pa ninyong pasakop sa dapat na sumakop sa inyo paris ng inyong mga pinuno nag rebelde sila at ayaw pasakop sa simbahan at sa Patriyarka. Sa banal na kasulatan sino ba ang ayaw pasakop sa simbahan ni Kristo at ni Kristo? Sino ang ayaw pasakop sa kalooban ng Diyos? Sino? Saliksikin nyo?

Sino sa banal na kasulatan ang nag-aakyat manaog sa langit pero ayaw pasakop sa Diyos? Paris ngayon, akyat manaog sa lupang banal pero ayaw pasakop sa Simbahan at sa MNI. Kalooban ng MNI na gawing Patriyarka at Ama ng mga tinatakan si Apo Juan, kalooban din iyan ng Mama Sta Virginia. Kung hindi kalooban noon pa man dapat wala nang ACC wala ng Patriyarka at sa pasimula at pasimula minensahe na ng MNI na di totoo ang ACC at ang PAtriyarka galing sa labi ng Sta Virginia.

Sa inyo Mama lamang sinununod ninyo pero ang totoo di nyo sinusunod dahil may sariling paliwanag ang inyong mga lider at iyon ang sinusunod ninyo - paliwanag na nagpadilim sa inyong isipan na di nyo napapansin advantage nila lamang ang sa kanila para manatili silang pari at obispo ninyo no more no less. Hindi na nila kayang bumalik sa pagiging karaniwang apo o tinatakan. Nasarapan na sila sa kanilang hiram na karangalan. Sa ebanghelyo ni San Lucas 2:26-38 , sa unang bahagi, ipinadala ng Diyos si Arkanghel Gabriel sa isang dalaga na ang pangalan ay Maria. Dito ay inihayag ng anghel ang pagkakatawang tao ng Anak ng Diyos- ang Verbo. Winika ng anghel na "Sumagot ang anghel at sinabi sa kaniya: Darating sa iyo ang Banal na Espiritu, at ang kapangyarihan ng Kataas-taasan ang lililim sa iyo. Dahil dito, ang banal na ito na iyong ipapanganak ay tatawaging Anak ng Diyos."

DARATING SA IYO ANG BANAL NA ESPIRITU AT ANG KAPANGYARIHAN NG KATAAS-TAASAN ANG LILILIM SA IYO!"

Dito ay maliwanag na sinabi na ang Mahal na Birhen Maria ay hindi ang Espiritu Santo.

IKALAWA: At sa aklat ng mga Gawa ng mga Apostoles ganito naman ang nakasulat:

Nagkakatipon ang mga Apostoles sa silid sa itaas kasama ang mga babae at ang Mahal na Birhen Maria, ina ng Panginoong Hesukristo. Dumating ang ipinangako ng Panginoon na binyag ng Espiritu Santo sa araw ng Pentekostes. Ganito ang pagkasalaysay:

"Nang sumapit ang araw ng Pentecostes, silang lahat ay nasa iisang pook na nagkakaisa. Sila ay nakaupo sa loob ng isang bahay. Biglang may umugong mula sa langit tulad ng humahagibis na marahas na hangin at pinuno nito ang buong bahay. May nagpakita sa kanila na nagkakabaha-bahaging mga dila tulad ng apoy at ito ay lumapag sa bawat isa sa kanila. At silang lahat ay napuspos ng Banal na Espiritu at nagsimulang magsalita sa ibang mga wika ayon sa ibinigay ng Espiritu sa kanila na kanilang sasabihin."

May dumating mula sa langit sa anyo ng dilang apoy at tumapat lumapag sa bawat isa sa kanila. Kung ang Mahal na Birhen Maria na ang Espiritu Santo sa anong dahilan at may pumanaog pa? At sa anong dahilan at kasama siya sa naghihintay kung siya din naman ang kanilang hinihintay?

Ang Mahal na Birhen Maria ay hindi ang ikatlong Persona ng Santissima Trinidad. Tulad ng winiwika ng MNI, "si Maria ay hindi Diyos, siya ay kaisa ng Diyos". Ang Mahal na Birhen Maria sa kabanalan at pagsunod sa kalooban ng Diyos ay higit sa lahat ng taong nabuhay noon at maging sa mga nabubuhay pa ngayon at sa mga susunod pang salinlahi. Siya ay katangi tangi at nag-iisa walang papantay sa kanyang kadakilaan.

IKATLO: Siya ang katuparan ng sinaunang Kaban ng Tipan sa panahon ni Nunong Moyses, siya ang kaban na pinagtaguan ng piraso ng batong kinatitikan ng Sampung Utos ng Diyos, ng tinapay na Manna, ng tungkod ni Moyses, ni Aaron na nagbulaklak. Ang kaban ng Tipan na tagpuan, ang orakulo o dako na kung saan ang kaluwalhatian ng Diyos ng Israel ay tumatahan, doon kinakatagpo ng mga Punong Saserdote ang Diyos. Ang kaban ng Tipan ay hindi ang Diyos. Ang Kaban ng Tipan ay luklukan ng Diyos at ang Luklukan ay hindi Diyos.

Sa larawan sa itaas, makikita natin na ang liwanag sa pagitan ng dalawang magkaharap na Kerubin ay ang Presensya ng Diyos ng Israel, yaon ang Diyos, at ang Kaban naman ay ang nasa ibaba na kinatutungtongan ng dalawang Kerubin. Ang Diyos at ang Kaban ng Tipan ay magkaiba. Ang Mahal na Birhen Maria ay hindi ang ikatlong Persona ng Santissima Trinidad.

IKAAPAT: Noong magpakita, sa kauna unahang pagkakataon ang Mahal na Ingkong sa Banal na Patriyarka, ang Diyos Espiritu Santo ay napakita sa anyo at mukha ng Panginoong Hesukristo, sa kanyang palad at paa ay may butas ng pako, hindi ang Mahal na Birhen Maria ang nagpakita, kundi ang nabuhay na mag-uling Panginoong Hesukristo.

IKALIMA: Nang makipagtipan ang Mahal na Ingkong sa ating pinakamamahal na Mama, Sta Maria Virginia, hindi ang Mahal na Birhen Maria ang napakita kundi ang napakita din sa Banal na Patriyarka - ang Nabuhay na Mag-uling Panginoong Hesukristo.

From a Catholic Movement to a Full-Pledged Church

Maria Virginia, a woman with a heart of abundant love, with fervent desire to serve God and her fellowmen, begun joining church activities and became active in church ministries. She joined three-day Christian faith classes called Cursillo. Having attended several Cursillo classes as a rector, her experiences gave her ideas in reaching out the strayed and lost souls back to the Lord. Armed with her prayers, faith and trust to God and guidance of Beloved Ingkong, she came up building her own Cursillo group, named Holy Spirit Apostolic Catholic Cursillo Foundation, Inc. Since then, an enormous zeal and strength grew in her as she untiringly converts stray souls back to God.

One day, as instructed by Beloved Ingkong, she built a community in a mountainous part of Hermosa, Bataan. Seeking remedies for their aliments; solutions for their problems; peace for their disturbed souls; and all sorts of desperations, people flocked to that place. As they received graces and healings, Beloved Ingkong instructed them to live a holy life and pray hard, for the world is not at peace. So many pilgrims responded and make sacrifices for the reparation of sinners. That place was later on called "Sacrifice Valley"

In 1985, the faithful members were organized and named their movement asSacrifice Valley Kilusang Katoliko. Two years after, this movement grew internationally.

In 1987, the faithful members registered their movement to the Securities of Exchange Commission (SEC) as the First International Sacrifice Valley Kilusang Katoliko Inc. (FISVKKI), then became Sacrifice Valley Pilgrimage Center, and thereafter, were proclaimed as The Pilgrimage Capital of Bataan.

Amid the growing of members in this Catholic movement, the Roman Catholic Church clergies suddenly stopped their pastoral services in Sacrifice Valley. Bishop Celso Guevarra, issued pastoral letters regarding the beliefs of its members, that was not according to Catholic faith and teachings. The Diocese of Bataan officially proclaimed that Sacrifice Valley is not of Catholic Pilgrimage Center anymore, but it is a cult assembly of an Anti-Christ movement. The reason behind is that they really want to stop the working of the Holy Spirit, our Beloved Ingkong.

Our Beloved Ingkong tripled the immeasurable number of pilgrims who flocked for His living messages. His healing power wonders even to those who were terminally ill; enlightened the hopeless; converted people from vices like drugs and alcoholism, gambling, and among many others. It spread to every corner of the land, here and abroad.

The calling of the Holy Spirit grows its membership into a global extent. Calling people from all walks of life, even called by means of dreams. All believers were baptized and sealed by His Mark of Holiness that spread to as far as China, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States of America.

Our Patriarch, Dr. John Florentine L. Teruel, P.P. was consecrated a full-pledged Bishop in California that gave this movement an opportunity to be a Legitimate Church. He has a mandated letter given to him as Bishop to serve this community.

The year 1992 signifies the formation of the Church to fulfill a divination from Vassula Ryden, a visionary, who prophesied that a sprout would grow between the gates of the Eastern and Western Rite who will bridge them towards a Church of the end times by the Holy Spirit.

On July 7, 1992, on the Feast of Pentecost, Patriarch John founded the First International Sacrifice Valley Apostolic Catholic Church (FISVACC).

It was officially admitted to the roster of the Securities of Exchange Commission (SEC) in the Philippines, August 4, 1992, under Registration No. ANO92- 002797.

Annualy, every 22nd and 23rd of October, we are celebrating the true birth date of our Lord Jesus Christ as told us by Mahal na Ingkong.

The 25th of December which is being celebrated primarily by the Roman Catholics, and other Christian denomination and sects was in fact the day when the son of the pagan Roman god was born, Mithra. Roman Catholic Church, in their effort to convert the pagan Rome, cristianized their festivals. They put Christ to be celebrated on the same day, and with the decree of the Emperor, people followed suit.

Gradually, the celebration for the pagan god was replaced or substituted by the birth of the Messiah, the true Son of God. The same thing was done to almost all of the pagan festivals in Rome and in its colonies. This was the way how the Roman religion made its way to the hearts of the people. They baptized or christen the pagan festivals and substituted their icons, symbols, and meanings with the Christian meanings and names of Saints, hence came the Patron Saint of almost all events, places, dates, ages, and profession.

FOR THE APOSTOLIC CATHOLIC CHURCH

For us, sealed servants we celebrate annually the true birth date of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ every October. And we call the infant Jesus in his name, "NOEMI".

THE NAME NOEMI

The name "Noemi" was one of the,if not the only, names of the child Jesus. The book Martir ng Golgotha told us that it was the name that our Blessed Mother used to address her son when he was being searched after being lost for three days; he was found with the doctors and elders in the temple of Jerusalem. Mahal na Ingkong told us that the name Noemi was Jesus name so as to hid his identity from the searching Roman soldiers who were tasked to behead children ages 2 below. Noemi was the name of the child Jesus and he was born on the evening of October 22.

OCTOBER 22-23
There are at least two types of Calendar being used these days, the Lunar and the Solar Calendars. The Lunar Calendar follows and counts the appearances of each new moon to calculate days, month, and years. While the Solar Calenda based its count to the movement of the sun. Hence, Lunar or Luna for the moon, this is where we got the day of LUNES or Moon-day or simply Monday.

It is said that in the ancient time, there were ten months in a year which was modified later on into twelve, inserting the names of Julius and Augustus, both Cesars of Rome. With this insertion October, November and December which were supposed to be the 8th, 9th, and 10th month of the year were also adjusted accordingly.

KASAYSAYAN NG LAHI

The highlight of the festivity was the re-enactment of the birth of Jesus through the melodrama entitled "Kasaysayan ng Lahi" which were being prepared by the National Auxiliary and with participations of other regional auxiliaries. The Kasaysayan ng Lahi narrates the Salvation History from the fall of Lucifer, the creation story, the temptation and driving our of the first couple, Adam and Eve, from Paradise, to the Patriarchs, to Joseph the dreamer, Moses, the Judges, the Kings, the Prophets until the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Everyone is invited to watch this wonderful presentation.

"KARACOL OR ATI-ATIHAN"

Karakol tagalized "Charcoal" for the tagalog "uling" which is also identified as Ati-atihan is the next highlight of the event as several Auxiliaries, painted with black or charcoal, dressed in tribal attire, dances with the beat of drums, whistles,and cheers while other sealed servants raised and danced their Sto Nino images during the procession. Ati-atihan is a tribal and native dance of Kalibo on the island of Panay in honor of the Sto Nino.

ORIGIN OF ATI ATIHAN

In the thirteenth century, long before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, light-skinned immigrants from the island of Borneo (Kalimantan) in Indonesia arrived on Panay. The local people of Panay, the Ati (negritos), a small and dark (black) kinky-haired people, sold them a small piece of land and allowed them to settle down in the lowlands. The Atisthemselves, lived more upland in the mountains.

One time the Ati people was in need of food because of a bad harvest in their homelands. They came down to the lowlands of the Maraynon and asked them food. Every year since then, the Atis came down to the lowland inhabitants to ask for some food. They danced and sang in gratitude for the helping hand. A real friendship was born and the Maraynon started to paint their faces black in honor of the Atis and took part in the fiesta

Spanish influence

After the Spaniards settled down in the Philippines, some Catholic elements infiltrated in the fiesta, especially honoring Santo Niño. A Spanish representative arranged a deal with the local leaders of the Atis and the leader of the immigrants from Borneo. The outcome of the deal was, that in the future the existing native celebration would be dedicated to the Santo Niño. Nowadays it is a mix of parades, procession and dancing people on the rhythms of monotonous music of drums or the rhythmic tinkling of metal and stone on bottles. It looks as if the dancing never stops! The ritual dance originates from the Atis. The name Ati-Atihan means "make-believe Atis."

Viva kay Santo Niño!

It is said that the procession is the climax of the fiesta. It is held on the last Sunday. The street dancers never fail to enter the Kalibo church every time they pass by.

Alois Irlmaier

Irlmaier was a simple German man who, in the 1950s, made predictions of a third world war. This is a small sampling of what he claimed the third world war would look like: “Everything calls peace. Shalom! Then it will occur — a new Middle East war suddenly flares up, big naval forces are facing hostility in the Mediterranean — the situation is strained. But the actual firing spark is set on fire in the Balkans: I see a ‘large one’ falling, a bloody dagger lies beside him –then impact is on impact. Two men kill a third high-ranked. They were paid by other people. One of the murderers is a small black man, the other a little bit taller, with bright-colored hair. I think it will be at the Balkans, but I cannot say it exactly. [...] Immediately the revenge comes from across the large water. However the yellow dragon invades in Alaska and Canada at the same time. But he comes not far. And then it rains a yellow dust in a line. When the golden city is destroyed, it begins…” Most interesting in these predictions is the fact that he believes the war will begin in the Middle East which seems certain to many people in the 21st century. 9Hildegard von Bingen

I am a great fan of St Hildegard – a polymath nun from the 12th century and, while she is very well known for her incredible contributions to classical music and literature, she is not so well known for her prophesies (of which there were many). In one prediction it appears she is referring to the destruction of the United States: “”Before the Comet comes, many nations, the good excepted, will be scoured with want and famine.

The great nation in the ocean that is inhabited by people of different tribes and descent by an earthquake, storm and tidal waves will be devastated. It will be divided, and in great part submerged. That nation will also have many misfortunes at sea, and lose its colonies in the east through a Tiger and a Lion.

The Comet by its tremendous pressure, will force much out of the ocean and flood many countries, causing much want and many plagues. [After the] great Comet, the great nation will be devastated by earthquakes, storms, and great waves of water, causing much want and plagues.

The ocean will also flood many other countries, so that all coastal cities will live in fear, with many destroyed. All sea coast cities will be fearful and many of them will be destroyed by tidal waves, and most living creatures will be killed and even those who escape will die from a horrible disease.” She also predicted that peace would return to Earth when the French throne is restored (very interesting when you consider that it had not been destroyed at that time). Baba Vanga

Baba Vanga was a blind Bulgarian woman (born 1911, died 1996) who was a herbalist and alleged mystic who made many predictions for the future. She became incredibly popular due to her so-called mystical powers. When she died huge crowds attended her funeral. Among her many predictions she claimed that by 4599 man would achieve immortality and that less than 100 years later we would begin assimilating with the aliens we meet on the hundreds of planets we will have populated. She claimed that in 4509 man will become sufficiently developed that he will begin to communicate with God directly. In 2221, while searching for extraterrestrial life man will come into contact with something truly terrible (though she didn’t state what). Closer to our own time she predicted a change in the Earth’s orbit in 2023. Curiously she predicted the beginning of World War III in 2010, which does not obviously appear to have happened – though her followers say the machinations may be in place for this to happen.

The True Third Secret

On June 26, 2000, the well known third secret of Fatima was revealed by Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), accompanied by a theological commentary. The secret referred to a Pope being killed and a city in ruins (full text here). What most people don’t know is that during the many years in which the secret was hidden from all but a few eyes, portions of it (and hints at what it contained) were leaked, by people who had either read the secret or spoken to Sister Lucia (the seer who penned it – pictured above). The leaked information did not correspond with the secret released by the Vatican. Consequently a large number of people believe that the Vatican document is a fake, released to avoid the scandal that would occur if the real secret got out. Purportedly the real secret refers to an apostasy in the Church starting with the Pope (in other words, the Pope/Popes would stop teaching the Catholic faith and fall into error). It also describes a council which will pervert the Church (believed by many to be Vatican II which reversed many traditional Catholic principles and beliefs). This was known for at least forty years prior to the release of the Vatican version of the Secret. What is most interesting is that Sister Lucia said the secret had to be released by 1960, or after her death (whichever came first). Why she chose that specific year is unknown but, curiously, the Vatican II council was started in 1962, with both Popes of the council (John XXIII and Paul VI) saying that they would not release the third secret. Another related prophesy is also very interesting; Pope Pius XII (the Pope prior to John XXIII and the II Vatican Council) said: “We believe that the present hour is a dread phase of the events foretold by Christ. It seems that darkness is about to fall on the world. Humanity is in the grip of a supreme crisis.”

Ursula Southeil Prophesies

Ursula Southeil (Mother Shipton, 1488–1561) is most likely to be the best known prophet on this list. There is much modern debate about the veracity of her predictions, but whether or not she wrote the most famous one attributed to her, she was known as a prophetess at the time of Samuel Pepys, as he wrote about the Royal family discussing her predictions. Here are some of her more interesting prophesies:

1. A carriage without horse will go, Disaster fill the world with woe. In London, Primrose Hill shall be In center hold a bishops sea.
2. Around the world men’s thoughts will fly, Quick as the twinkling of an eye. And water shall great wonders do, How strange, and yet it shall come true.
3. In water, iron then shall float As easy as a wooden boat. Gold shall be seen in stream and stone, In land that is yet unknown.
4. And England shall admit a Jew, Do you think this strange? But it is true! The Jew that once was led in scorn, Shall of a Christian then be born. [Britain creating the Israeli state?]
5. For in those wondrous far off days, The women shall adopt a craze To dress like men, and trousers wear And to cut off all their locks of hair. They’ll ride astride with brazen brow, As witches do on broomsticks now.

Tarabich Prophesy

Mitar Tarabich is a little known prophet from Serbia. He lived from 1829 – 1899, and is believed to have predicted many events relating to Serbia in the 1930s, 1940s and World War II:

“After [Tito] our land will be governed by some kind of commission, but it will never be as it was. Even though the people in our kingdom will forget about misery and hunger and will live in great wealth, brother will start to hate and think evil of brother…. The Serbs will separate from each other, and they will say: “I am not a Serb, I am not a Serb.” The unholy one will infiltrate this nation and bed with Serbian sisters, mothers and wives. He will sire such children that among the Serbs, since the beginning of the world, these will be the worst of offspring. Only weaklings will be born, and nobody will be strong enough to give a birth to a real hero.”

He also made other predictions about the future, relating mostly to technology: “Men will build a box and within will be some kind of gadget with images… “, “Man will travel to other worlds to find lifeless deserts there…”, “Those who will read and write different books with numbers will think that they know the most…”.

Robert Nixon Prophesies

Robert Nixon was a young man who worked as a plowboy in the county of Cheshire, England, in the late 15th century. Because he rarely spoke, and usually babbled incomprehensibly when he did, Nixon was thought to be mentally retarded. Despite this, he came out with a number of surprising (and apparently accurate) predictions of the future. Here are a few of them:

“The weary eagle shall to an island in the sun retire, where leaves and herbs grow fresh and green. There shall he meet a lady fair” – this is believed to be a prophesy of Napoleon who was sent to St Helena in 1815 – an island with an abundance of rare plants and named for Helen of Troy who was a “lady fair”.

Another curious prophesy is believed by some to predict the worldwide use of cigarettes: “All sorts will have chimneys in their mouths”.

In addition to the above, Nixon is believed to have predicted voyages to the moon, travel by rockets, RVs, voice recording devices and lightbulbs. When he was summoned to the court of Richard III he refused to make any prophesies except that he would be starved to death. The King ordered him to be kept in the kitchen, but a cook (unwittingly) locked him in a cupboard where he starved to death.

Prophecy of the Popes

The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, is a list of 112 short phrases in Latin. They purport to describe each of the Catholic popes (along with a few anti-popes), beginning with Pope Celestine II (elected in 1143) and concluding with a pope described in the prophecy as “Peter the Roman”, whose pontificate will end in the destruction of the city of Rome.

What is most interesting about this prophecy is that the current pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI (listed as the “Glory of the Olive” – Benedict is the founder of the Benedictine monks whose symbol is the olive branch) is the last Pope before Peter the Roman. Tying this in with other aspects of Catholic eschatology (the study of the end times) which generally describes a great apostasy in the Church prior to the second coming of Christ, many Catholics believe that we are now in the end times and that the next pope will be the last before the final judgment. Here is the text of the prophecy as it relates to the final Pope:

“In the last persecution of the Holy Roman Church, Peter the Roman will hold the see (lit. “sit”), who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations: and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [Rome] will be destroyed, and the terrible judge will judge his people. The End.”

White Horse Prophesy

Mormon readers amongst us may be familiar with this prophesy, but most of us aren’t. The White Horse Prophecy is a statement purported to have been made in 1843, by Joseph Smith (founder of the Mormon religion). According to the prophecy, the Mormons would “go to the Rocky Mountains and … be a great and mighty people”, identified figuratively with the White Horse described in the Apocalypse of St John. The prophecy further predicts that the United States Constitution will one day “hang like a thread” and will be saved “by the efforts of the White Horse”. “A terrible revolution will take place in the land of America, such as has never been seen before; for the land will be left without a Supreme Government, and every specie of wickedness will be practiced rampantly in the land. Father will be against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother. The most terrible scenes of bloodshed, murder and rape that have ever been imagined or looked upon will take place.” Smith believed that the US Constitution was written by the inspiration of God and that the Mormon religion would save it – and America during this time he prophesied.

Prophecy of St Nilus

St Nilus was a 5th century ascetic monk who was a disciple of St John Chrysostom (a doctor of the Church). He made a prophecy (though some dispute it dates from his time) relating to the 20th century which is striking in its foresight. Here are a few particularly pertinent sections of the prophesy (you can read the entire thing here) – the last phrase is particularly interesting:

After the year 1900, toward the middle of the 20th century, the people of that time will become unrecognizable. When the time for the Advent of the Antichrist approaches, people’s minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonor and lawlessness will grow stronger. Then the world will become unrecognizable. [...] People’s appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to their shamelessness in dress and style of hair. [...]

At that time the morals and traditions of Christians and of the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society. [...] At that time men will also fly through the air like birds and descend to the bottom of the sea like fish. And when they have achieved all this, these unhappy people will spend their lives in comfort without knowing, poor souls, that it is deceit of the Antichrist…

Three Secret Strategies of Satan to Destroy our Children, our Families, our Culture, and our Church

Satan has a secret. It is the secret about his three primary strategies to destroy us. If Satan can convince our culture to adopt the philosophy precipitated by these secret strategies he can brainwash our children, disrupt our families, manipulate our culture, and bring apostasy within the Church.

All the problems that we see today in society and in our church can be traced to these three fundamental strategies. It is the basis of the politically correct movement and of the heresy of individualism. These strategies are the fuel that powers feminism, the engine that drives liberalism, and the vehicle of the postmodern worldview that dominates our world today and that contaminates the Church.

These three secret strategies are:
• All opinions are equal
• Never judge anyone
• Never step on toes

No one escapes the sinister tentacles of these devilish doctrines; we are all contaminated by these strategies—every one of us. The question is not whether we are immune from these strategies, for we are not; it is not whether we are indeed contaminated by them, because we are; the only question is what are we going to
do about it? How are we to exorcise the contamination of this pervasive worldview from our minds?

This essay will present the first step to help the reader to recognize these strategies in order to avoid Satan’s lies.

All Opinions are Equal
The modus operandi of today’s mores is to believe that all opinions are equal. Each person’s opinion has the same dignity, deserves the same respect, and is equally as valid as any other opinion.

This is a demonic lie.
It is a demonic lie because genuine opinion is necessarily related to the virtue of Truth. Objective and fundamental truths are either true or they are not; they cannot be both true and untrue at the same time. Since those issues of faith and morals relate to objective Truth, varying opinions about such issues cannot be equal. In fact, some opinions are silly, some are better than others, and some are just plain wrong. Honest opinion seeks to know the truth and to express it. To know the truth we must know the One who is the Truth: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” declares Jesus, and through this Truth we shall find freedom—freedom from sin and freedom from the slavery of our limited understandings.

As the Scripture says in 1 Corinthians 13:12: “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then [in heaven] face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully.”

Thus we must rely not upon our own understanding, but upon God who understands all: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight [understanding]. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eye. —Proverbs 3:5-7

To rely upon God for understanding is to submit our will and our opinions to the wisdom and understanding of God. Our opinion can never be equal with God and thus our notion of truth cannot be discerned except through God. To fool ourselves into thinking otherwise, into thinking we can assert an opinion contrary to God’s“opinion” is utter arrogance and foolishness.

The Bible informs us: Therefore men fear him [God]; he does not regard any who are wise in their own conceit. Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements — surely you know! Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this… Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule on the earth? … Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, and spreads his wings toward the south. —Job 37:24; 38:1-5a, 17-18; 38:33; 39:26

Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?...‘ For the foolishness of God is wiser than men… —1 Corinthians 1:20, 25a O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge, for by professing it some have missed the mark as regards the faith. —1 Timothy 6:20-21 God is the only true reality and the only genuine Truth. Because of this we learn:

Our opinion has dignity only to the measure it conforms to the “opinion” of God.
Opinion has value only as it is consistent with Truth. Since God is Truth that means we must submit to and obey God’s Truth, God’s opinion, and not our own understanding.
Opinion has value only as it serves to reveal Truth.

Therefore, if two opinions are in competition, the opinion more closely aligned with Truth is the better opinion, and the opinion that conforms to God’s opinion is the only right opinion. How do we know God’s opinion? Christ made Peter his vicar with the authority to infallibly declare upon issues of faith and morals. Thus the Holy Spirit protects us, through the Magisterium of His Church and the successor of Peter, from the
capriciousness and enslavement of personal opinion asserted independently and without obedience to God and His Church. Why submit our opinion to the Church when God is Truth? Can we not discern for ourselves what God’s opinion might be? We must submit our opinion to the Church because Christ gave the Church the
authority to guard His Truth. The Church by this appointment is the “pillar and
bulwark [foundation] of truth” as St. Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 3:15.

Thus if opinion is to submit to truth, that is, if it is to submit to God, then opinion must submit to the guardian and pillar of that truth—the Church and God’s Vicar, the Pope. We can now see one of the greatest spiritual wars we wage. It is the war with ourselves, with individual self-determined opinion. This is why St. Paul declares:

For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the
knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. ‘ But we will not boast beyond limit, but will keep to the limits God has apportioned us’” —2 Corinthians 10:3-6, 13a

Notice what Paul identifies as this non-worldly weapon with divine power to destroy strongholds—OBEDIENCE (taking every thought and opinion captive under obedience to Christ).

Consider this illustration. You are in a taxi and the taxi crashes breaking your leg. A bone is protruding from your leg. On the scene are the taxi driver who barely knows first aid and a passerby who happens to be an orthopedic surgeon. Whose “opinion” has precedence over how your leg will be treated? Does the taxi driver
have an equal opinion to the orthopedic surgeon? Does the taxi driver even have a right to an opinion? The taxi driver trying to assert a contrary opinion against the orthopedic surgeon’s professional expertise is utter arrogant foolishness; and to accept the taxi driver’s opinion over the surgeon’s risks losing your leg or even your life. Yet even in obvious situations like the case of the taxi driver, or when discussing the equally obvious objective Truth taught by the Church, some in the midst of the argument will innocently say (usually to politely dismiss a heretic who will not listen), “Well, let us agree to disagree.” This writer never does that when the issue is an issue of fundamental truth. If we are talking about PC’s versus MACs we can agree to disagree, or preferences of apples over oranges we can agree to disagree, though I think the opinion in favor of MACs is misguided and I personally prefer apples. But if we are talking about dogma, about the definitive teaching of the Church, about objective truth, there can be no “agree to disagree.” To “agree to disagree” with error is to grant to that error a false recognition that it is somehow on the same level of dignity as the Truth. Error is never on the same level of dignity with Truth. Error has no dignity except as a possible motivator to lead us to the Truth that we missed. But if we are not confronted in our error, how can we be motivated to move toward Truth?

St. Paul teaches us:
For there are many insubordinate men, empty talker and deceivers—they must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for base gain what they have no right to teach... therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, instead of giving heed to Jewish myths or to commands of men who reject the truth. —Titus 1:13

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead,— preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. For a time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. —2 Timothy 4:2-4

Not all opinion is equal.
In these passages we have the clue as to why Satan wants us to believe that all opinion is equal. If we believe in this doctrine of demons we will then:

presume our opinions in arrogance above God (Job 37; 1 Corinthians 1)
miss the mark of our faith (1 Timothy 6)
fail to find obedience & thus allow Satan’s strongholds in our lives (2 Corinthians 10)
be a participant and accomplice to falsehood (Titus 1)
deceive ourselves by listening only to those who tell us what we want to hear (2 Timothy 4)

Never Judge Anyone
As just stated above, error has no dignity except as a possible motivator to lead us to truth. But if we are not confronted in our error, how can we be motivated to move toward truth?

St. Paul instructs us to judge:

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead,… preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. For a time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. —2 Timothy 4:2-4

We are to judge the teaching of teachers, the opinions of people, the attitudes and behaviors of people. If we don’t, then we allow sin and Satan to exploit the weak and ignorant and vulnerable with his lies. We are to preach the Truth and rebuke those who assert error—not in an attitude of rock throwing or some sort of controlling self-righteousness, but in a loving attitude of helping the person return to God (2 Timothy 4:2). We are our brothers’ keepers (ref., Mark 12:31; Luke 10:25-37; Matthew 7:12; 18:23-35; Luke 6:31).

We have a responsibility to warn and admonish our brethren in the faith, just as we have a responsibility to our blood-brothers to warn them when they go astray because we love them.St. Paul to the Romans exhorted good Catholics to instruct one another (Romans 15:14). To instruct someone necessarily means to evaluate (another word for judge) the one to whom instruction is given.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states (No 1868): “… we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them: by (among several actions on our part) not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so.”

We cannot “disclose” a sin without first assessing (yet another word for judging) that the sin is in fact there in the first place. In addition, one of the traditional seven Spiritual Works of Mercy is to “Admonish the sinner.”
Again, we cannot admonish that which we refuse to recognize in the sinner. We must make an assessment (judgment) that the person is sinning and thus “needs”admonishment. All of this sometimes requires “tough love”.

Our model in this tough love is no less that Jesus Himself (who, contrary to popular opinion was not a 60’s flower child with flowers in his hair repeating a mantra of peace and love). Jesus preached a demanding love, a love so demanding that in some cases it would rip apart families:“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law –a man's enemies will be the members of his own household. Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” —Matthew 10:34-38

Truth cannot be compromised—even if it makes enemies of our relatives. Some people will not accept the truth and will hate those who preach it. Truth demands judgment; that is, truth demands we see things truthfully and to call things what they are. If we see sin or error, we must call it for what it is.The Bible is filled with passages talking about how we are to judge others. Before listing some of those, first let us look at the kind of judgment we are not to do.The most famous of the several “do not judge” passages: Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log
that is in your own…” —Matthew 7:1-3

In this passage we see three kinds of judgment we are not to do:
1. Judgment of Condemnation:
Judgment in this passage is referring to condemning (“pronouncing” judgment on a person’s soul). We are not the “Judge” to pronounce condemnation on anyone (not even ourselves). Only God can do that. The
Church, for example, never pronounces “anyone” in hell. And even in the assessment of a person declared a saint, it is done by special dispensation granted to the Church by her authority of the “keys”. But even with this authority, we need to note that it is never applied to judging a person in hell. If the Church, who has the authority of the keys will not judge a person to condemnation, how can we? We are never to judge a person’s state of soul. Jesus tells us that we will receive ourselves the judgment of soul that we place on others if we attempt this usurpation of God’s sovereignty.

2. Judgment from Double–Standards:
When we use double–standards for judgment, apply one measure to others and a different measure to ourselves we commit a sin. Jesus says that we will not get by with that (a form of hypocrisy). The standards we apply to others will be applied to us as well

3. Judgment from Self-Righteousness:
The last sentence of the passage quoted refers to seeing sins in others but not in oneself. This is self-righteousness (another form of hypocrisy). In this passage, Jesus does not say that we cannot judge. He says that we are not to judge in the manner of presuming condemnation on another or to make judgments borne from hypocrisy (double-standard & self-righteousness). In verse 5 Jesus continues: You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
Taking the speck out of our brother’s eye is not condemned in itself. Hypocritical judgment is what Jesus condemns.We can immediately see this is the meaning of these passages by going on to the
very next verse:
Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you.Dogs? Swine? How are we to know who is a dog or a swine? We cannot take Jesus’
advice, which is advice for self-protection (e.g. when Jesus said the swine will “turn to attack you”), if we do not judge a person, that is, to identify a person as a metaphorical “dog” or “swine.” Who are the dogs and swine? Verse 15 gives us one clue when it talks about false prophets who come in sheep’s clothing. Verse 21 Jesus talks about people calling to him, “Lord, Lord” yet some of these will not enter heaven. They will not enter heaven because despite their calling upon the name of the Lord, they are people who refuse to do God’s will. Verse 26 tells us more about these people. They are people who do not just fail to follow God’s will, but who actively disobey the teachings of Jesus and thus they build their house on sand (and that includes disobeying the Church, who has been given authority to speak infallibly and definitively in Jesus’ name to the faithful— when the Church speaks, Jesus speaks).

Throughout Scripture we are given examples of these dogs and swine and are repeatedly told to shun them, to avoid them, and even to kick them out of our community as to give them up to Satan. In Matthew 10:13-14 Jesus tells the disciples to shake the very dust off their clothes of any city that refuses to listen to them. That requires a judgment. St. Paul in Titus 3:9-11 tells us to warn a heretic (divisive person) twice and then
have nothing more to do with him because such a person is “perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.” We don’t condemn him, he condemns himself, but we do judge him to be divisive beyond tolerance because we tried to admonish him (judge his behavior and warn him of his sin) twice but he would not repent.

St. Paul commands us in 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 to not associate with people calling themselves Christians who are “guilty of immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or robber—not even to eat with such a one.” Then Paul actually says and confirms in black and white language in verse 12 without any shades of gray that we are to judge our fellow Christians (but interestingly to not to judge those outside of the church): “Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside.” We are our brother’s keeper and if we love, we will admonish a brother in sin or error.

St. Paul also tells us in 2 Timothy 3:1-9 that we are to avoid people who are “holding to a form of religion but denying the power of it” (e.g., liberals who strip our Church of its sacramental power). Other we are to avoid include those who are “Lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God…”.

And finally, St. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 that some people must be excommunicated—completely removed from fellowship and handed over to Satan. Paul specifically says, “I have already pronounced judgment in the name of the Lord Jesus on the man who has done such a thing… you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” This form of judgment (excommunication), by the way, is one reserved to the Church and is not a personal judgment exacted by the faithful. Jesus, Himself, calls for this formal judgment on the part of the Church in Matthew
18:15-18.

As we have seen, the idea we are not to judge is a lie.We cannot judge a person’s state of soul, of course. We cannot condemn him. We are also not to judge out of hypocrisy. But we are to make proper judgments, borne out of love, to admonish a sinner in order to encourage him to repentance. That is the goal, to save the sinner’s soul, to lead him to repentance.

We are to make judgments of behavior, attitudes, and ideas in order to protect our loved-ones and ourselves from danger. People who practice such dangerous and sinful behaviors, or have such dangerous attitudes and ideas, we are to avoid. We cannot avoid them until and unless a judgment has been made that such people are of the type the Bible tells us to avoid.

The idea we are not to judge is a doctrine of demons. Satan would love us to avoid making judgments. If he can convince us of this, sin can abound without criticism and we could continue in our sin without accountability and the philosophies of Satan can contaminate all of us with impunity unchecked and unchallenged. Oh, how Satan loves those who think we are not to judge and those who think
Jesus was a love-freak hippie from the 60’s.

Never Step on Toes
These strategies build upon one another. We began with the lie that all opinions are equal. This illogic leads to the idea that if all opinions are equal, then we cannot judge. What is there to judge if we all stand equally in our views and behaviors apart from an assessment of truth? Judgment requires distinguishing between things and determining relative validity between the distinctions; e.g., one right and the other wrong. If all is equal there can be no value distinctions, only different but equal assertions that have equal validity. Now with the first two legs of this devilish worldview in place, we come to the third leg, the third secret strategy—Never Step on Toes.

This strategy is the police officer of the triad and the foundation for the other two. The job of this strategy is to protect the other two strategies from challenge, to keep anyone from exposing the lies. Insisting that we all be nice to each other does this. This “niceness,” of course, is a mask for obfuscating the truth.It is interesting to examine the meaning of the word, “nice”.“Nice” comes from the Latin, nescius, which comes from nescire. Nescire is formed from ne (meaning “not”) and scire (meaning “to know”). Thus the word, “nice”,
means “to not know”, “to not separate from another”, “to not discern”.This is interesting in that, for example, the standard liberal tactic of political correctness is to use the idea of “niceness” as a way to control people to keep them from discerning the truth, to keep from judging distinctions between that which is right and that which is wrong.

In Middle English the word “nice” referred to being foolish and without sense. By the 15th Century the word referred to being elegant in conduct and dress, but not in the sense of a compliment; it was an insult referring to people behaving with “false civility”.

The use of the word “nice” as a compliment was first recorded in 1769 when is came to mean “agreeably delightful”. But in the post-modern times of today, this word, as used by those not wishing to admit to the truth of things, has come to be a negative weapon meant to cut off the knees of one’s opponent—”You’re not being nice!” No one wants to be thought of as being unkind, of course.To be sure, a person who asserts a truth that the hearer doesn’t wish to admit to is, indeed, not being “agreeably delightful”. In fact the truth-sayer is being disagreeable by destroying the delight the erroneous person had in being free and unchallenged in their error.

But more than this, the way in which those asserting error use this concept of “niceness” strategically is to demand this “false civility” in order to control the situation, in order to ensure their lies are not exposed. It is a civility that demands “agreeable” demeanor even at the compromise of truth. It is better to be agreeable
than it is to tell the truth. And with this value of agreeableness, error goes unchallenged and truth obfuscated.
What is often used against those who ignore this game of niceness, is to accuse the person of not acting in a way that Jesus would act. As mentioned in the previous discussion, Jesus is seen as a 60’s flower-child type person who is a mild mannered milquetoast, gentle as a lamb, always agreeable and never harsh.This image of Jesus is a demonic lie. It is a delusion. It is a delusion because the Scriptural evidence does not support
this image as the “exclusive” way in which Jesus conducted himself, yet despite the clear record of Scripture, people insist upon the milquetoast image.Many verses have already been quoted in this essay that show an image of Jesus that is not always so “nice.” Jesus never compromised truth for niceness and cordiality. He told us he did not come to bring peace but division, even the division of our families (Matthew 10), he told us to not throw pearls before swine (Matthew 7), to shake off the dust of places who would not listen (Matthew 10). Jesus himself called people names of great insult, like “brood of vipers” (Matthew 3:7; 12:34; 23:23) which was one of the greatest insults a person could heap on another in those days. Jesus also gave tongue-lashings such as this famous “thou hypocrite”speech in Matthew 23:1-38 (calling a person a hypocrite was also one of the major insults of the time).

In addition, His apostles preaching His teaching instructs us to not associate with those calling themselves Christian but living a life of sin (1 Corinthians 5). We are also to avoid certain people who pretend to religion but who deny its power (2 Timothy 3), to shun heretics and divisive people (Titus 3), and even to hand
unrepentant sinners over to Satan (1 Corinthians 5).11 All these things require judgments to be made. When confronted with the situation that warrants it, the teachings of Jesus fly in the face of niceness. The teachings of Christ step on toes.

Jesus also gives us the image of the shepherd. Jesus is often depicted as the gentle shepherd who searches for his lost lamb and brings it home safely in his arms.Well, Jesus does do that, and so should we. But Jesus does more than just this gentle image. He gave His apostles the image of a shepherd. This image, contrary to popular opinion, is not an image of mere gentleness.

When Jesus called His bishops and priests to be Shepherds what did that mean? The apostles knew exactly what that meant for they were intimately aware of the role and job of a shepherd. In today’s industrialized world, most people who don’t live on farms at least, have lost touch with the realities of raising livestock.
The “real” shepherd was a person who gently guided his sheep to pasture with his staff. He was a man who would search for the lost lamb and lovingly bring the lamb back in the safety of his arms. But that is not all he did. The staff of the shepherd was also used to discipline loitering sheep. If a sheep refused to come back to the flock the shepherd was not so nice in convincing the rebellious sheep to return. In extreme circumstances, the rebellious sheep may even be killed if it refused to return to the flock (note: a rebellious sheep is not the
lost lamb happy to be brought back to the flock in the loving arms of the shepherd, but one who stubbornly refuses to return).

In addition, the staff of the shepherd was a weapon of defense. If a feral dog or a wolf were to be among the flock, a shepherd would race through the flock to get to the dog or wolf to kill it before it killed any of his sheep. When racing through the flock to get to the intruder the shepherd would not politely hurry through the crowd of sheep saying, “Oh please excuse me, I must get through here.” The shepherd would race through the crowd knocking sheep to the ground, stepping on toes, knocking them left and right, whatever he had to do to get to the wolf in time to kill it before the wolf killed any of the flock.

This is the image of the shepherd. How many shepherds do we have in our Church today? Now please do not misunderstand. It is not that we are to be deliberately nasty. Of course we are not to do that. We are to be gentle and cordial unless circumstances warrant a more “tough love” approach. But in whatever we do and in however we do it, we are never to compromise truth for the sake of civility or for the sake of popularity or to be accepted by our peers, or for fear of being made fun of or disliked

Recently Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, O.S.B., D.D., Archbishop of Indianapolis, in a speech called, Doctrinal Deficiencies Caused by Desire Not to Offend, Judge or Exclude, spoke about our postmodern culture’s desire to not offend anyone or exclude anyone.

The motive of plausibility, the motive not to offend or exclude is good and important in itself, but not at the expense of important truth. Authentic inculturation of truth cannot be achieved with plausibility as the presumed first principle.

He said that this motivation to not offend has caused serious deficiencies on catechesis, preaching, and liturgy. Indeed how can we expect our young people especially, but also the adults, to know their faith, to believe what the Church believes, to understand proper liturgy if we avoid the truth out of a misplaced sense of “niceness”, or “plausibility” as the Archbishop calls it. The Archbishop defines “plausibility”, as reported by the Criterian (the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis), “as something deserving applause or popular approval. For example, a plausible argument is one that is pleasing or acceptable to those who hear it, but it is not necessarily a rational argument or one that is consistent with the truth.”

This is remarkably similar to the definition of “nice”. “Nice”, we remember, came to mean “agreeably delightful” —Plausibility is “pleasing” and “acceptable”.The Archbishop is saying that truth cannot be sacrificed for “niceness” (plausibility): I am convinced, the Archbishop said, that the doctrinal incompleteness is due to the prevailing cultural principle of the primacy of plausibility. Christ calls us to truth, even when it hurts. Certainly Christ calls us to gentleness, and civility, but never at the expense of truth. Even when tough love has to be applied to those inscrutable souls who refuse to obey God through His Church, we
so clearly learn from St Paul in 1 Corinthians 5, that these measures of “tough love” are designed to make it clear to the sinner the seriousness of his actions. The sinner needs to know the risk he takes with his soul. The “tough love” is exercised always in hope that the sinner will return to the faith and once again partake in full
fellowship and communion with Christ’s Church.

We do no favors to wayward souls by enabling their errors with our false civility any more than we do a favor to a child who deserves an “F” on a term paper, but receives an “A” for fear we might hurt his feelings.

As Archbishop Buechlein states: Surely we agree that evangelizing catechesis or preaching and also worship
and prayer cannot succumb to the weight of plausibility (that is, public approval) over doctrine and theology in the practice and life of the Church.Yet we do precisely that, allow our lives and our Church to become even slaves to a worldview of plausibility (niceness) that asserts all opinions are equal and we are never to judge even when it might lead a soul to hell. We must proclaim the Fullness of the Truth. To do that we need to understand the three secret strategies of Satan proposed in this essay. With that understanding we
can then discern when we have crossed the line into, or have been contaminated by, these demonic notions. With that understanding we can guard ourselves from the error of the primacy of plausibility. Then we are able to “teach and live the Divine Truth.”

“We must do so, as the Archbishop concludes, “with the greatest fidelity and yet do so in such a way that speaks to the minds and hearts of the human family in our times. The primacy of plausibility [and this writer would add, with its desire to respect opinions and never to judge even at the expense of truth] must be overshadowed by our deep commitment to proclaim the fullness of truth in season and out of season.

Satan had a secret. Now that you know his secret, his scheme and strategy to destroy our children, our
families, our culture, and our Church, what are you going to do? “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’” —John 1:23

THE PRIESTHOOD

In the age of the Patriarchs the offering of sacrifices was the function of the father or head of the family (cf. Genesis 8:20; 12:7, etc.; Job 1:5). But, even before Moses, there were also regular priests, who were not fathers of family (cf.Exodus 19:22 sqq.). Hummelauer's hypothesis "Das vormosaische Priestertum in Israel", Freiburg, 1899) that this pre-Mosaic priesthood was established by God Himself and made hereditary in the family of Manasses, but was subsequently abolished in punishment of the worship of the golden calf (cf. Exodus 32:26 sqq.), can hardly be scientifically established (cf. Rev. bibl. internat., 1899, pp. 470 sqq.). In the Mosaic priesthood we must distinguish: priests, Levites, and high-priest.

Priests

It was only after the Sinaitical legislation that the Israelitic priesthood became a special class in the community. From the tribe of Levi Jahweh chose the house of Aaron to discharge permanently and exclusively all the religious functions;Aaron himself and later the first-born of his family was to stand at the head of this priesthood as high-priest, while the other Levites were to act, not as priests, but as assistants and servants. The solemn consecration of the Aaronites to the priesthood took place at the same time as the anointing of Aaron as high-priest and with almost the sameceremonial (Exodus 29:1-37; 40:12 sqq.; Leviticus 8:1-36). This single consecration included that of all the future descendants of the priests, so that the priesthood was fixed in the house of Aaron by mere descent, and was thushereditary. After the Babylonian Exile strict genealogical proof of priestly descent was even more rigidly demanded, and any failure to furnish the same meant exclusion from the priesthood (Ezra 2:61 sq.; Nehemiah 7:63 sq.). Certain bodily defects, of which the later Talmudists mention 142, were also a disqualification from the exercise of the priestly office (Leviticus 21:17 sqq.). Age limits (twenty and fifty years) were also appointed (2 Chronicles 31:17); the priests were forbidden to take to wife a harlot or a divorced woman (Leviticus 21:7); during the active discharge of the priesthood, marital intercourse was forbidden. In addition to an unblemished earlier life, levitical cleanness was also indispensable for the priesthood. Whoever performed a priestly function in levitical uncleanness was to be expelled like one who entered the sanctuary after partaking of wine or other intoxicating drinks (Leviticus 10:9; 22:3). To incur an uncleanness "at the death of his citizens", except in the case of immediate kin, was rigidly forbidden (Leviticus 21:1 sqq.). In cases of mourning no outward signs of sorrow might be shown (e.g. by rending the garments). On entering into their office, thepriests had first to take a bath of purification (Exodus 29:4; 40:12), be sprinkled with oil (Exodus 29:21; Leviticus 8:30), and put on the vestments.

The priestly vestments consisted of breeches, tunic, girdle, and mitre. The breeches (feminalia linea) covered from the reins to the thighs (Exodus 28:42). The tunic (tunica) was a kind of coat, woven in a special manner from one piece; it had narrow sleeves, extended from the throat to the ankles, and was brought together at the throat with bands (Exodus 28:4). The girdle (balteus) was three or four fingers in breadth and (according to rabbinic tradition) thirty-two ells long; it had to be embroidered after the same pattern and to be of the same colour as the curtain of the forecourt and thetabernacle of the covenant (Exodus 39:38). The official vestments were completed by the mitre (Exodus 39:26), aspecies of cap of fine linen. As nothing is said of foot-covering, the priests must have performed the services barefooted as Jewish tradition indeed declares (cf. Exodus 3:5). These vestments were prescribed for use only during the services; at other times they were kept in an appointed place in charge of a special custodian. The official duties of the priests related partly to their main occupations, and partly to subsidiary services. To the formercategory belonged all functions connected with the public worship, e.g. the offering of incense twice daily (Exodus 30:7), the weekly renewal of the loaves of proposition on the golden table (Leviticus 24:9), the cleaning and filling of the oil-lamps on the golden candlestick (lev., xxiv, 1). All these services were performed in the sanctuary. There were in addition certain functions to be performed in the outer court — the maintenance of the sacred fire on the altar for burntsacrifices (Leviticus 6:9 sqq.), the daily offering of the morning and evening sacrifices, especially of the lambs (Exodus 29:38 sqq.). As subsidiary services the priests had to present the cursed water to wives suspected of adultery(Numbers 5:12 sqq.), sound the trumpets announcing the holy-days (Numbers 10:1 sqq.), declare the lepers clean orunclean (Leviticus 13-14; Deuteronomy 24:8; cf. Matthew 8:4), dispense from vows, appraise all objects vowed to thesanctuary (Leviticus 27), and finally offer sacrifice for those who broke the law of the Nazarites, i.e. a vow to avoid allintoxicating drinks and every uncleanness (especially from contact with a corpse) and to let one's hair grow long (Numbers 6:1-21). The priests furthermore were teachers and judges; not only were they to explain the law to the people (Leviticus 10:11; Deuteronomy 33:10) without remuneration (Micah 3:11) and to preserve carefully the Book of the Law, of which a copy was to be presented to the (future) king (Deuteronomy 17:18), but they had also to settle difficult lawsuits among the people (Deuteronomy 17:8; 19:17; 21:5). In view of the complex nature of the liturgicalservice, David later divided the priesthood into twenty-four classes or courses, of which each in turn, with its eldest member at its head, had to perform the service from one Sabbath to the next (2 Kings 11:9; cf. Luke 1:8). The order of the classes was determined by lot (1 Chronicles 24:7 sqq.).

The income of the priests was derived from the tithes and the firstlings of fruits and animals. To these were added as accidentals the remains of the food, and guilt-oblations, which were not entirely consumed by fire; also the hides of the animals sacrificed and the natural products and money vowed to God (Leviticus 27; Numbers 8:14). With all these perquisites, the Jewish priests seem never to have been a wealthy class, owing partly to the increase in their numbers and partly to the large families which they reared. But their exalted office, their superior education, and their socialposition secured them great prestige among the people. In general, they fulfilled their high position worthily, even though they frequently merited the stern reproof of the Prophets (cf. Jeremiah 5:31; Ezekiel 22:26; Hosea 6:9; Micah 3:11;Malachi 1:7). With the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus in A.D. 70 the entire sacrificial service and with it the Jewishpriesthood ceased. The later rabbis never represent themselves as priests, but merely as teachers of the law.

Levites in the narrow sense

It has been said above that the real priesthood was hereditary in the house of Aaron alone, and that to the other descendants of Levi was assigned a subordinate position as servants and assistants of the priests. The latter are theLevites in the narrow sense. They were divided into the families of the Gersonites, Caathites, and Merarites (Exodus 6:16; Numbers 26:57), so named after Levi's three sons, Gerson, Caath, and Merari (cf. Genesis 46:11; 1 Chronicles 6:1). As simple servants of the priests, the Levites might not enter the sanctuary, nor perform the real sacrificial act, especially the sprinkling of the blood (aspersio sanguinis). This was the privilege of the priests (Numbers 18:3, 19 sqq.;18:6). The Levites had however to assist the latter during the sacred services, prepare the different oblations and keep the sacred vessels in proper condition. Among their chief duties was the constant guarding of the tabernacle with theark of the covenant; the Gersonites were encamped towards the west, the Caathites towards the south, the Meraritestowards the north, while Moses and Aaron with their sons guarded the holy tabernacle towards the east (Numbers 3:23 sqq.). When the tabernacle had found a fixed home in Jerusalem, David created four classes of Levites: servants of thepriests, officials and judges, porters, and finally musicians and singers (1 Chronicles 23:3 sqq.). After the building of theTemple by Solomon the Levites naturally became its guardians (1 Chronicles 26:12 sqq.). When the Temple was rebuiltLevites were established as guards in twenty-one places around (Talmud; Middoth, I, i). In common with the priests, theLevites were also bound to instruct the people in the Law (2 Chronicles 17:8; Nehemiah 8:7), and they even possessed at times certain judicial powers (2 Chronicles 19:11).

They were initiated into office by a rite of consecration: sprinkling with the water of purification, shaving of the hair, washing of the garments, offering of sacrifices, imposition of the hands of the eldest (Numbers 8:5 sqq.). As to the age of service, thirty years was fixed for the time of entrance and fifty for retirement from office (Numbers 4:3; 1 Chronicles 23:24; Ezra 3:8). No special vestments were prescribed for them in the Law; in the time of David and Solomon the bearers of the ark of the covenant and the singers wore garments of fine linen (1 Chronicles 15:27; 2 Chronicles 5:12). At the division of the Promised Land among the Twelve Tribes, the tribe of Levi was left without territory, since the LordHimself was to be their portion and inheritance (cf. Numbers 18:20; Deuteronomy 12:12; Joshua 13:14). Incompensation, Jahweh ceded to the Levites and priests the gifts of natural products made by the people, and otherrevenues. The Levites first received the tithes of fruits and beasts of the field (Leviticus 27:30 sqq.; Numbers 18:20 sq.), of which they had in turn to deliver the tenth part to the priests (Numbers 18:26 sqq.). In addition, they had a share in the sacrificial banquets (Deuteronomy 12:18) and were, like the priests, exempt from taxes and military service. The question of residence was settled by ordering the tribes endowed with landed property to cede to the Levites forty-eight Levite towns, scattered over the land, with their precincts (Numbers 35:1 sqq.); of these, thirteen were assigned to the priests. After the division of the monarchy into the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Juda, many Levites from the northern portion removed to the Kingdom of Juda, which remained true to the Law, and took up their abode in Jerusalem. After the Northern Kingdom had been chastised by the Assyrian deportation in 722 B.C., the Southern Kingdom was also overthrown by the Babylonians in 606 B.C., and numbers of the Jews, including manyLevites, were hurried away into the "Babylonian exile". Only a few Levites returned to their old home under Esdras in 450 (cf. Ezra 2:40 sqq.). With the destruction of the Herodian Temple in A.D. 70 the doom of the Levites was sealed.

The high priest

At Jahweh's command Moses consecrated his brother Aaron first high-priest, repeated the consecration on seven days, and on the eighth day solemnly introduced him into the tabernacle of the covenant. The consecration of Aaronconsisted in washings, investment with costly vestments, anointing with holy oil, and the offerings of various sacrifices(Exodus 29). As a sign that Aaron was endowed with the fullness of the priesthood, Moses poured over his head the oil of anointing (Leviticus 8:12), while the other Aaronites, as simple priests, had only their hands anointed (Exodus 29:7, 29). The high-priest was for the Jews the highest embodiment of theocracy, the monarch of the whole priesthood, the special mediator between God and the People of the Covenant, and the spiritual head of the synagogue. He was thepriest par excellence, the "great priest" (Greek, archiereus), the "prince among the priests", and, because of theanointing of his head, the "anointed priest". To this exalted office corresponded his special and costly vestments, worn in addition to those of the simple priests (Exodus 28). A (probably sleeveless) purple-blue upper garment (tunica) fell to his knees, the lower seam being ornamented alternately with small golden bells and pomegranates of coloured thread. About the shoulders he also wore a garment called the ephod; this was made of costly material, and consisted of two portions about an ell long, which covered the back and breast, were held together above by two shoulderbands or epaulets, and terminated below with a magnificent girdle. Attached to the ephod in front was the shield (rationale), a square bag bearing on the outside the names of the twelve tribes engraved on precious stones (Exodus 28:6), and containing within the celebrated Urim and Thummim as the means of obtaining Divine oracles and prophecies. Thevestments of the high-priest were completed by a precious turban (tiara), bearing on a golden frontal plate the inscription: "Sacred to Jahweh".

The high-priest had supreme supervision of the Ark of the Covenant (and of the Temple), of Divine service in general and of the whole personnel connected with public worship. He presided at the Sanhedrin. He alone could perform the liturgyon the Feast of Expiation, on which occasion he put on his costly vestments only after the sacrifices were completed. He alone might offer sacrifice for his own sins and those of the people (Leviticus 4:5), enter the holy of holies (sanctum sanctorum), and seek counsel of Jahweh on important occasions. The office of high-priest in the house of Aaron was at first hereditary in the line of his first-born son Eleazar, but in the period from Heli to Abiathar (1131 to 973 B.C.) it belonged, by right of primogeniture, to the line of Ithamar. Under the rule of the Seleucidæ (from about 175 B.C.) the office was sold for money to the highest bidder. At a later period it became hereditary in the family of the Hasmon. With the destruction of the central sanctuary by the Romans, the high-priesthood disappeared.
Against the foregoing account of the Mosaic priesthood, based on the Old Testament, the negative biblical critics of today make a determined stand. According to the hypothesis of Graf-Wellhausen, Moses (about 1250 B.C.) cannot be the author of the Pentateuch. He was not the Divinely appointed legislator, but simply the founder of Monolatry, forethical Monotheism resulted from the efforts of much later Prophets. Deuteronomy D made its appearance in substancein 621 B.C., when the astute high-priest Helkias by a pious fraud palmed off on the god-fearing King Josias the recently composed "Book of the Laws" D as written by Moses (cf. 2 Kings 22:1 sqq.) When Esdras returned to Jerusalem from theBabylonian Exile about 450 B.C., he brought back the "Book of the Ritual" or the priest's codex P, i.e., the middle portions between Genesis and Deuteronomy, composed by himself and his school in Babylon, although it was only in 444 B.C. that he dared to make it public. A clever editor now introduced the portions relating to public worship into the old, pre-Exilichistorical books, and the entirely new idea of an Aaronic priesthood and of the centralization of the cult was projected back to the time of Moses. The story of the tabernacle of the covenant is thus a mere fiction, devised to represent theTemple at Jerusalem as established in fully developed form at the dawn of Israelitic history and to justify the unity ofworship. Although this hypothesis does not contest the great antiquity of the Jewish priesthood, it maintains that the centralization of the cult, the essential difference between priests and Levites, the supreme authority of the priests of the Temple at Jerusalem as compared with the so-called hill-priests (cf. Ezekiel 44:4 sqq.), must be referred to post-Exilic times.

Without entering upon a detailed criticism of these assertions of Wellhausen and the critical school (see PENTATEUCH), we may here remark in general that the conservative school also admits or can admit that only the original portion of thePentateuch is to be accepted as Mosaic, that in the same text many repetitions seem to have been brought together from different sources, and finally that additions, extensions, and adaptations to new conditions by an inspired author of a later period are by no means excluded. It must also be admitted that, though one place of worship was appointed,sacrifices were offered even in early times by laymen and simple Levites away from the vicinity of the Ark of the Covenant, and that in restless and politically disturbed epochs the ordinance of Moses could not always be observed. In the gloomy periods marked by neglect of the Law, no attention was paid to the prohibition of hill-sacrifices, and theProphets were often gratified to find that on the high places (bamoth) sacrifice was offered, not to pagan gods, but toJahweh. However, the Pentateuch problem is one of the most difficult and intricate questions in Biblical criticism. The Wellhausen hypothesis with its bold assumptions of pious deceits and artificial projections is open to as great, if not greater, difficulties and mysteries as the traditional view, even though some of its contributions to literary criticism may stand examination. It cannot be denied that the critical structure has suffered a severe shock since the discovery of theTell-el-Amarna letters dating from the fifteenth century B.C., and since the deciphering of the Hammurabi Code. Theassumption that the oldest religion of Israel must have been identical with that of the primitive Semites (Polydæmonism,Animism, Fetishism, Ancestor-worship) has been proved false, since long before 2000 B.C. a kind of Henotheism, i.e.,Polytheism with a monarchical head was the ruling religion in Babylon. The beginnings of the religions of all peoples are purer and more spiritual than many historians of religions have hitherto been willing to admit. One thing is certain: the final word has not yet been spoken as to the value of the Wellhausen hypothesis.

The Christian priesthood

In the New Testament bishops and priests are, according to Catholic teaching, the sole bearers of the priesthood, the former enjoying the fullness of the priesthood (summus sacerdos s. primi ordinis), while the presbyters are simplepriests (simplex sacerdos s. secundi ordinis). The deacon, on the other hand, is a mere attendant of the priest, with nopriestly powers. Omitting all special treatment of the bishop and the deacon, we here confine our attention primarily to the presbyterate, since the term "priest" without qualification is now taken to signify the presbyter.

The divine institution of the priesthood

According to the Protestant view, there was in the primitive Christian Church no essential distinction between laity andclergy, no hierarchical differentiation of the orders (bishop, priest, deacon), no recognition of pope and bishops as the possessors of the highest power of jurisdiction over the Universal Church or over its several territorial divisions. On the contrary, the Church had at first a democratic constitution, in virtue of which the local churches selected their own heads and ministers, and imparted to these their inherent spiritual authority, just as in the modern republic the "sovereign people" confers upon its elected president and his officials administrative authority. The deeper foundation for this transmission of power is to be sought in the primitive Christian idea of the universal priesthood, which excludes the recognition of a special priesthood. Christ is the sole high-priest of the New Testament, just as His bloody death on theCross is the sole sacrifice of Christianity. If all Christians without exception are priests in virtue of their baptism, an official priesthood obtained by special ordination is just as inadmissible as the Catholic Sacrifice of the Mass. Not the material sacrifice of the Eucharist, consisting in the offering of (real) gifts, but only the purely spiritual sacrifice of prayerharmonizes with the spirit of Christianity. One is indeed forced to admit that the gradual corruption of Christianity began very early (end of first century), since it cannot be denied that Clement of Rome (Ep. ad Cor., xliv, 4), the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles (Didache, xiv), and Tertullian (On Baptism 17; "De præsc. hær.", xli; "De exhort. cast.", vii) recognize an official priesthood with the objective Sacrifice of the Mass. The corruption quickly spread throughout the whole East and West, and persisted unchecked during the Middle Ages, until the Reformation finally succeeded in restoring to Christianity its original purity. Then "the idea of the universal priesthood was revived; it appeared as thenecessary consequence of the very nature of Christianity. . . . Since the whole idea of sacrifice was discarded, all danger of reversion to the beliefs once derived from it was removed" ("Realency cl. für prot. Theol.", XVI, Leipzig, 1905, p. 50).

To these views we may answer briefly as follows. Catholic theologians do not deny that the double "hierarchy of order and jurisdiction" gradually developed from the germ already existing in the primitive Church, just as the primacy of thepope of Rome and especially the distinction of simple priests from the bishops was recognized with increasing clearness as time advanced (see HIERARCHY). But the question whether there was at the beginning a special priesthood in theChurch is altogether distinct. If it is true that "the reception of the idea of sacrifice led to the idea of the ecclesiasticalpriesthood" (loc. cit., p. 48), and that priesthood and sacrifice are reciprocal terms, then the proof of the Divine origin of the Catholic priesthood must be regarded as established, once it is shown that the Eucharistic Sacrifice of the Mass is coeval with the beginnings and the essence of Christianity. In proof of this we may appeal even to the Old Testament. When the Prophet Isaias foresees the entrance of pagans into the Messianic Kingdom, he makes the calling of priestsfrom the heathen (i.e. the non-Jews) a special characteristic of the new Church (Isaiah 66:21): "And I will take of them to be priests and Levites, saith the Lord". Now this non-Jewish (Christian) priesthood in the future Messianic Churchpresupposes a permanent sacrifice, namely that "clean oblation", which from the rising of the sun even to the going down is to be offered to the Lord of hosts among the Gentiles (Malachi 1:11). The sacrifice of bread and wine offered byMelchisedech (cf. Genesis 14:18 sqq.), the prototype of Christ (cf. Psalm 109:4; Hebrews 5:5 sq.; 7:1 sqq.), also refers prophetically, not only to the Last Supper, but also to its everlasting repetition in commemoration of the Sacrifice of theCross (see MASS). Rightly, therefore, does the Council of Trent emphasize the intimate connection between theSacrifice of the Mass and the priesthood (Sess. XXIII, cap. i, in Denzinger, "Enchiridion", 10th ed., 957): "Sacrifice andpriesthood are by Divine ordinance so inseparable that they are found together under all laws. Since therefore in theNew Testament the Catholic Church has received from the Lord's institution the holy visible sacrifice of the Eucharist it must also be admitted that in the Church there is a new, visible and external priesthood into which the older priesthood has been changed." Surely this logic admits of no reply. It is, then, all the more extraordinary that Harnack should seek the origin of the hierarchical constitution of the Church, not in Palestine, but in pagan Rome. Of the Catholic Church he writes: "She continues ever to govern the peoples; her popes lord it like Trajan and Marcus Aurelius. To Romulus and Remus succeeded Peter and Paul; to the proconsuls the archbishops and bishops. To the legions correspond the hosts ofpriests and monks; to the imperial bodyguard the Jesuits. Even to the finest details, even to her judicial organization, nay even to her very vestments, the continued influence of the ancient empire and of its institutions may be traced" ("Das Wesen d. Christentums", Leipzig, 1902, p. 157). With the best of good will, we can recognize in this description only a sample of the writer's ingenuity, for an historical investigation of the cited institutions would undoubtedly lead to sources, beginnings, and motives entirely different from the analogous conditions of the Empire of Rome.

But the Sacrifice of the Mass indicates only one side of the priesthood; the other side is revealed in the power of forgiving sin, for the exercise of which the priesthood is just as necessary as it is for the power of consecrating andsacrificing. Like the general power to bind and to loose (cf. Matthew 16:19; 18:18), the power of remitting and retainingsins was solemnly bestowed on the Church by Christ (cf. John 20:21 sqq.). Accordingly, the Catholic priesthood has the indisputable right to trace its origin in this respect also to the Divine Founder of the Church. Both sides of the priesthood were brought into prominence by the Council of Trent (loc. cit., n. 961): "If any one shall say that in the New Testament there is no visible and external priesthood nor any power of consecrating and offering the Body and Blood of the Lord, as well as of remitting and retaining sins, but merely the office and bare ministry of preaching the Gospel, let him be anathema." Far from being an "unjustifiable usurpation of Divine powers", the priesthood forms so indispensable afoundation of Christianity that its removal would entail the destruction of the whole edifice. A Christianity without apriesthood cannot be the Church of Christ. This conviction is strengthened by consideration of the psychologicalimpossibility of the Protestant assumption that from the end of the first century onward, Christendom tolerated without struggle or protest the unprecedented usurpation of the priests, who without credentials or testimony suddenly arrogated Divine powers with respect to the Eucharist, and, on the strength of a fictitious appeal to Christ, laid onbaptized sinners the grievous burden of public penance as an indispensable condition of the forgiveness of sin.
As for the "universal priesthood", on which Protestantism relies in its denial of the special priesthood, it may be said thatCatholics also believe in a universal priesthood; this, however, by no means excludes a special priesthood but rather presupposes its existence, since the two are related as the general and the particular, the abstract and the concrete, the figurative and the real. The ordinary Christian cannot be a priest in the strict sense, for he can offer, not a realsacrifice, but only the figurative sacrifice of prayer. For this reason the historical dogmatic development did not and could not follow the course it would have followed if in the primitive Church two opposing trains of thought (i.e. theuniversal versus the special priesthood) had contended for supremacy until one was vanquished. The history of dogmaattests, on the contrary, that both ideas advanced harmoniously through the centuries, and have never disappeared from the Catholic mind. As a matter of fact the profound and beautiful idea of the universal priesthood may be traced from Justin Martyr (Dialogue with Trypho 116), Irenæus, (Against Heresies IV.8.3), and Origen ("De orat.", xxviii, 9; "In Levit.", hom. ix, 1), to Augustine (City of God XX.10) and Leo the Great (Sermo, iv, 1), and thence to St. Thomas(Summa, III, Q. lxxxii, a. 1) and the Roman Catechism. And yet all these writers recognized, along with the Sacrifice of the Mass, the special priesthood in the Church. The origin of the universal priesthood extends back, as is known, to St. Peter, who declares the faithful, in their character of Christians, "a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices", and "a chosen generation, a kingly priesthood" (1 Peter 2:5, 9). But the very text shows that the Apostle meant only a figurative priesthood, since the "spiritual sacrifices" signify prayer and the term "royal" (regale, basileion) could have had but a metaphorical sense for the Christians. The Gnostics, Montanists, and Catharists, who, in their attacks on the special priesthood, had misapplied the metaphor, were just as illogical as the Reformers, since the two ideas, real and figurative priesthood, are quite compatible. It is clear from the foregoing that the Catholic clergy alone are entitled to the designation "priest", since they alone have a true and real sacrifice to offer, the Holy Mass. Consequently, Anglicanswho reject the Sacrifice of the Mass are inconsistent, when they refer to their clergy as "priests". The preachers inGermany quite logically disclaim the title with a certain indignation.

The hierarchical position of the presbyterate

The relation of the priest to the bishop and deacon may be briefly explained by stating that he is, as it were, the middle term between the two, being hierarchically the subordinate of the bishop and the superior of the deacon (cf. Council of Trent, Sess. XXVI, can. vi). While the pre-eminence of the bishop over the priest consists mainly in his power of ordination, that of the priest over the deacon is based on his power of consecrating and absolving (cf. Council of Trent, loc. cit., cap. iv; can. i and vii). The independence of the diaconate appears earlier and more clearly in the oldest sources than that of the priesthood, chiefly because of the long-continued fluctuation in the meaning of the titles episcopus and presbyter, which until the middle of the second century were interchangeable and synonymous terms. Probably there was a reason in fact for this uncertainty, since the hierarchical distinction between bishop and priestseems to have been of gradual growth. Epiphanius (Adv. hær., lxxv, 5) offered an explanation of this condition of uncertainty by supposing that priests were appointed in some places where there was no bishop, while in other places where no candidates for priesthood were found, the people were satisfied with having a bishop, who, however, could not be without a deacon. Cardinal Franzelin ("De eccles. Christi", 2nd ed., Rome, 1907, thes. xvi) gives good grounds for the opinion that in the Bible bishops are indeed named presbyter, but simple priests are never called episcopi. The problem is, however, far from being solved, since in the primitive Church there were not yet fixed names for the different orders; the latter must rather be determined from the context according to the characteristic functions discharged. The appealto the usage of the pagan Greeks, who had their episkopoi and presbyteroi, does not settle the question, as Ziebarth("Das griechische Vereinswesen", Leipzig, 1896) has shown in reply to Hatch and Harnack. Any attempt at a solution must take into account the varying use in different countries (e.g. Palestine, Asia Minor). In some places the "presbyters" may have been real bishops, in others priests in the present meaning of the term, while elsewhere they may have been mere administrative officers or worthy elders chosen to represent the local church in its external relations(see HIERARCHY OF THE EARLY CHURCH).

Like the Apostolic writings, the "Didache", Hermas, Clement of Rome, and Irenæus often use the terms "bishop" and"priest" indiscriminately. In fact, it is really a moot question whether the presbyterate gradually developed as an offshoot of the episcopate--which is in the nature of things more likely and in view of the needs of the growing Church more readily understood--or whether, conversely, the episcopate had its origin in the elevation of the presbyterate to a higher rank (Lightfoot), which is more difficult to admit. On the other hand, even at the beginning of the second century, Ignatius of Antioch (Ep. ad Magnes., vi and passim) brings out with remarkable clearness the hierarchicaldistinction between the monarchical bishop, the priests, and the deacons. He emphasizes this triad as essential to the constitution of the Church: "Without these [three] it cannot be called the Church" (Ad Trall., iii). But, according to thelaw of historic continuity, this distinction of the orders must have existed in substance and embryo during the first century; and, as a matter of fact, St. Paul (1 Timothy 5:17, 19) mentions "presbyters" who were subordinate to the realbishop Timothy. But in the Latin writers there is no ambiguity. Tertullian (On Baptism 17) calls the bishop the "summus sacerdos", under whom are the "presbyteri et diaconi"; and Cyprian (Ep. lxi, 3) speaks of the "presbyteri cum episcopo sacerdotali honore conjuncti", i.e. the priests united by sacerdotal dignity with the bishop (see BISHOP).
About 360, after the development of the orders had long been complete, Aërius of Pontus first ventured to obliterate the distinction between the priestly and episcopal orders and to place them on an equality with respect to their powers. For this he was ranked among the heretics by Epiphanius (Adv. hær., lxxv, 3). The testimony of St. Jerome (d. 420), whom the Scottish Presbyterians cite in behalf of the presbyteral constitution of the Church, raises some difficulties, as he appears to assert the full equality of priests and bishops. It is true that Jerome endeavoured to enhance the dignity of the priesthood at the expense of the episcopate and to refer the bishop's superiority "rather to ecclesiastical customthan to Divine regulation" (In Tit., i, 5: "Episcopi noverint se magis consuetudine quam dispositionis dominicæ veritate presbyteris esse majores"). He desired a more democratic constitution in which the priests hitherto undeservedly slighted would participate, and he urged the correction of the abuse, widespread since the third century, by which thearchdeacons, as the "right hand" of the bishops, controlled the whole diocesan administration (Ep. cxliv ad Evangel.). It is at once evident that Jerome disputes not the hierarchical rank (potestas ordinis) of the bishops but their powers of government (potestas jurisdictionis)--and this not so much in principle, but only to insist that the deacons should be dislodged from the position they had usurped and the priests established in the official position befitting their higher rank. How far Jerome was from being a follower of Aërius and a forerunner of Presbyterianism appears from his important admission that the power of ordination is possessed by the bishops alone, and not by the priests (loc. cit. in P.L., XXII, 1193: "Quid enim facit--excepta ordinatione--episcopus quod presbyter non faciat?"). By this admission Jeromeestablishes his orthodoxy.

The sacramentality of the presbyterate

The Council of Trent decreed (Sess. XXIII, can. iii, in Denzinger, n. 963): "If any one shall say that order or sacredordination is not truly and properly a sacrament instituted by Christ our Lord. . .let him be anathema." While the synoddefined only the existence of the Sacrament of Holy Orders, without deciding whether all the orders or only some fall within the definition, it is admitted that the priestly ordination possesses with even greater certainty than the episcopaland the diaconal ordination the dignity of a sacrament (cf. Benedict XIV, "De syn. dioces.", VIII, ix, 2). The threeessentials of a sacrament—outward sign, interior grace, and institution by Christ—are found in the priestly ordination.

As regards the outward sign, there has been a long-protracted controversy among theologians concerning the matterand form, not alone of the priestly ordination, but of the Sacrament of Holy Orders in general. Is the imposition of handsalone (Bonaventure, Morin, and most modern theologians), or the presentation of the instruments (Gregory of Valencia, the Thomists), or are both together (Bellarmine, De Lugo, Billot etc.) to be regarded as the essential matter of thesacrament? As to the priestly ordination in particular, which alone concerns us here, the difference of views is explained by the fact that, in addition to three impositions of hands, the rite includes a presentation to the candidate of thechalice filled with wine, and of the paten with the host. Concerning the latter Eugenius IV says expressly in his "Decretum pro Armenis" (1439; in Denzinger, n. 701): "The priesthood is conferred by the handing of the chalicecontaining wine and of the paten with bread." However, in view of the fact that in the Bible (Acts 13:3; 14:22; 1 Timothy 4:14; 5:22; 2 Timothy 1:6), in all patristic literature, and in the whole East the imposition of hands alone is found, while even in the West the presentation of the sacred vessels does not extend back beyond the tenth century, we are forced to recognize theoretically that the latter ceremony is unessential, like the solemn anointing of the priest'shands, which is evidently borrowed from the Old Testament and was introduced from the Gallican into the Roman Rite(cf. "Statuta ecclesiæ antiquæ" in P.L., LVI, 879 sqq.). In defence of the anointing, the Council of Trent condemned those who declared it "despicable and pernicious" (Sess. XXXIII, can. v). As regards the sacramental form, it may be accepted as probable that the prayer accompanying the second extension of hands (cheirotonia) is the essential form, although it is not impossible that the words spoken by the bishop during the third imposition of hands (cheirothesia): "Receive the Holy Ghost, whose sins you shall remit, they are remitted, etc.", constitute a partial form. The firstimposition of hands by the bishop (and the priests) cannot be regarded as the form, since it is performed in silence, but it also may have an essential importance in so far as the second extension of hands is simply the moral continuation of the first touching of the head of the ordinandus (cf. Gregory IX, "Decret.", I, tit. xvi, cap. III). The oldest formularies--e.g. the "Euchologium" of Serapion of Thmuis (cf. Funk, "Didascalia", II, Tübingen, 1905, 189), the "Pseudo-Apostolic Constitutions" (Funk, loc. cit., I, 520), the lately discovered "Testament of the Lord" (ed. Rahmani, Mainz, 1899, p. 68), and the Canons of Hippolytus (ed. Achelis, Leipzig, 1891, p. 61)--contain only one imposition of hands with a short accompanying prayer. In the eleventh century the Mozarabic Rite is still quite simple (cf. "Monum. liturg.", V, Paris, 1904, pp. 54 sq.), while, on the contrary, the Armenian Rite of the Middle Ages shows great complexity (cf. Conybeare-Maclean, "Rituale Armenorum", Oxford, 1905, pp. 231 sqq.). In the Greek-Byzantine Rite, the bishop, after making threesigns of the cross, places his right hand on the head of the ordinandus, meanwhile reciting a prayer, and then, praying in secret, holds the same hand extended above the candidate, and invokes upon him the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost (cf.Goar, "Euchol. Græc.", Paris, 1647, pp. 292 sqq.). For other formularies of ordination see Denzinger, "Ritus Orientalium", II (Würzburg, 1864); Manser in Buchberger, "Kirchliches Handlexikon", s.v. Priesterweihe.

As a sacrament of the living, ordination presupposes the possession of sanctifying grace, and therefore confers, besides the right to the actual graces of the priestly office, an increase of sanctifying grace (cf. "Decret. pro Armenis" inDenzinger, n. 701). But in all cases, whether the candidate is in the state of sanctifying grace or not, the sacramentimprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark (cf. Council of Trent, Sess. VII, can. ix, in Denzinger, n. 852), i.e. thepriestly character, to which are permanently attached the powers of consecrating and absolving—the latter, however, with the reservation that for the valid administration of the Sacrament of Penance the power of jurisdiction is also required (see CHARACTER). As the priestly character, like that imparted by baptism and confirmation, is indelible,ordination can never be repeated, and a return to the lay state is absolutely impossible (cf. Council of Trent, Sess. XXIII, can. iv, in Denzinger, n. 964). That priestly ordination was instituted by Christ is proved not alone by the Divine institution of the priesthood (see above, A), but also by the testimony of Holy Writ and Tradition, which unanimously testify that the Apostles transmitted their powers to their successors, who in turn transmitted them to the succeeding generation (cf. 1 Timothy 5:22). Since the charismatic gifts of the "apostles and prophets" mentioned in the "Didache" had nothing to do with the priesthood as such, these itinerant missionaries still needed the imposition of hands to empower them to discharge the specifically priestly functions (see CHARISMATA).
For the valid reception of the Sacrament of Orders, it is necessary that the minister be a bishop and the recipient abaptized person of the male sex. The first requisite is based on the episcopal prerogative of ordaining; the second on the conviction that baptism opens the door to all the other sacraments and that women are definitively barred from the service of the altar (cf. Epiphanius, "De hær.", lxxix, 2). St. Paul is a resolute champion of an exclusively male priesthood (cf. 1 Corinthians 14:34). In this respect there is an essential difference between Christianity and Paganism, since the latter recognizes priestesses as well as priests--e.g. the hierodules of Ancient Greece, the vestal virgins of Rome, the bajaders of India, the wu of China, and the female bonzes of Japan. The early Church condemned as an absurdity thefemale priesthood of Montanism and of the Collyridiani, and it never regarded the Apostolic institute of deaconesses as a branch of Holy orders. For the licit reception of priestly ordination, canon law demands: freedom from every irregularity, completion of the twenty-fourth year, the reception of the earlier orders (including the diaconate), the observation of the regular interstices, and the possession of a title to ordination.
In addition to the requisites for the valid and lawful reception of the priesthood the question arises as to the personal worthiness of the candidate. According to earlier canon law this question was settled by three ballots (scrutinia); it is now decided by official examination and certification. One of the most important means of securing worthy candidates for the priesthood is careful inquiry regarding vocations. Intruders in the sanctuary have at all times been the occasion of the greatest injury to the Church, and of scandal to the people. For this reason, Pope Pius X, with even greater strictness than was shown in previous ecclesiastical regulations, insists upon the exclusion of all candidates who do not give the highest promise of a life conspicuous for firmness of faith and moral rectitude. In this connection the importance and necessity of colleges and ecclesiastical seminaries for the training of the clergy cannot be too strongly emphasized.

The official powers of the priest

As said above, the official powers of the priest are intimately connected with the sacramental character, indelibly imprinted on his soul. Together with this character is conferred, not only the power of offering up the Sacrifice of the Mass and the (virtual) power of forgiving sins, but also authority to administer extreme unction and, as the regularminister, solemn baptism. Only in virtue of an extraordinary faculty received from the pope is a priest competent to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. While the conferring of the three sacramental orders of the episcopate,presbyterate, and diaconate, pertains to the bishop alone, the pope may delegate a priest to administer the four minor orders, and even the subdiaconate. According to the present canon law, however, the papal permission granted toabbots of monasteries is confined to the conferring of the tonsure and the four minor orders on their subjects (cf.Council of Trent, Sess. XXIII de Ref., cap. x). Concerning the privilege of conferring the diaconate, claimed to have been given to Cistercian abbots by Innocent VIII in 1489, see Gasparri, "De sacr. ordin.", II (Paris, 1893), n. 798, and Pohle, "Dogmatik", III (4th ed., Paderborn, 1910), pp. 587 sqq. To the priestly office also belongs the faculty of administering the ecclesiastical blessings and the sacramentals in general, in so far as these are not reserved to the pope or bishops. By preaching the Word of God the priest has his share in the teaching office of the Church, always, however, as subordinate to the bishop and only within the sphere of duty to which he is assigned as pastor, curate, etc. Finally, thepriest may participate in the pastoral duty in so far as the bishop entrusts him with a definite ecclesiastical office entailing a more or less extensive jurisdiction, which is indispensable especially for the valid absolution of penitents from their sins. Certain external honorary privileges, e.g. those enjoyed by cardinal-priests, prelates, ecclesiastical councillors, etc., do not enhance the intrinsic dignity of the priesthood.

What the Catholic priesthood has done for civilization

Passing entirely over the supernatural blessings derived by mankind from the prayers of the priesthood, the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice, and the administration of the sacraments, we shall confine ourselves to the secular civilization, which, through the Catholic priesthood, has spread to all nations and brought into full bloom religion, morality, science, art, and industry. If religion in general is the mother of all culture, Christianity must be acknowledged as the source, measure, and nursery of all true civilization. The Church, the oldest and most successful teacher of mankind, has in each century done pioneer service in all departments of culture. Through her organs, the priests and especially the members of the religious orders, she carried the light of Faith to all lands, banished the darkness of paganism, and with the Gospelbrought the blessings of Christian morality and education. What would have become of the countries about the Mediterranean during the epoch of the migration of the nations (from 375) if the popes, bishops, and clergy had not tamed the German hordes, converted them from Arianism to Catholicism, and out of barbarism evolved order? WhatIreland owes to St. Patrick, England owes to St. Augustine, who, sent by Pope Gregory the Great, brought not only theGospel, but also a higher morality and culture. While the light of Christianity thus burned brightly in Ireland and Britain, part of Germany was still shrouded in the darkness of paganism. Bands of missionaries from the Island of Saints now brought to the continent the message of salvation and established new centres of culture. Charlemagne's great work of uniting all the German tribes into an empire was only the glorious fruit of the seed sown by St. Boniface of Certon (d. 755) on German soil and watered with the blood of martyrs. The Church of the Middle Ages, having now attained to power, continued through her priests to propagate the Gospel in pagan lands. It was missionaries who first brought toEurope news of the existence of China. In 1246 three Franciscans, commissioned by the pope, appeared in audience before the emperor of the Mongols; in 1306 the first Christian church was built in Peking. From the Volga to the Desertof Gobi, the Franciscans and Dominicans covered the land with their missionary stations. In the sixteenth century thezeal of the older orders was rivalled by the Jesuits, among whom St. Francis Xavier must be accorded a place of honour; their achievements in the Reductions of Paraguay are as incontestable as their great services in the United States. As for the French colonies in America, the American historian Bancroft declares that no notable city was founded, no river explored, no cape circumnavigated, without a Jesuit showing the way. Even if Buckle's one-sided statement were true, viz. that culture is not the result of religion, but vice versa, we could point to the work of Catholic missionaries, who are striving to lift the savages in pagan lands to a higher state of morality and civilization, and thence to transform them into decent Christians.
In the wake of religion follows her inseparable companion, morality; the combination of the two forms is the indispensable preliminary condition for the continuation and vitality of all higher civilization. The decadence of culture has always been heralded by a reign of unbelief and immorality, the fall of the Roman Empire and the French Revolution furnishing conspicuous examples. What the Church accomplished in the course of the centuries for the raising of the standard ofmorality, in the widest sense, by the inculcation of the Decalogue, that pillar of human society, by promulgating thecommandment of love of God and one's neighbour, by preaching purity in single, married, and family life, by waging warupon superstition and evil customs, by the practice of the three counsels of voluntary poverty, obedience, and perfectpurity, by holding out the "imitation of Christ" as the ideal of Christian perfection, the records of twenty centuries plainly declare. The history of the Church is at once the history of her charitable activity exercised through the priesthood. There have indeed been waves of degeneracy and immorality sweeping at times even to the papal throne, and resulting in the general corruption of the people, and in apostasy from the Church. The heroic struggle of Gregory VII (d. 1085) against the simony and incontinence of the clergy stands forth as a fact which restored to the stale-grown salt of the earth its earlier strength and flavour.
The most wretched and oppressed classes of humanity are the slaves, the poor, and the sick. Nothing is in such harsh contrast to the ideas of human personality and of Christian freedom as the slavery found in pagan lands. The efforts of the Church were at first directed towards depriving slavery of its most repulsive feature by emphasizing the equality and freedom of all children of God (cf. 1 Corinthians 7:21 sqq.; Philemon 16 sqq.), then towards ameliorating as far as possible the condition of slaves, and finally towards effecting the abolition of this unworthy bondage. The slowness of the movement for the abolition of slavery, which owed its final triumph over the African slave-traders to a crusade ofCardinal Lavigerie (d. 1892), is explained by the necessary consideration of the economic rights of the owners and the personal welfare of the slaves themselves, since a bold "proclamation of the rights of man" would simply have thrown millions of helpless slaves breadless into the streets. Emancipation carried with it the obligation of caring for the bodily needs of the freedmen, and, whenever the experiment was made, it was the clergy who undertook this burden. Specialcongregations, such as the Trinitarians and the Mercedarians, devoted themselves exclusively to the liberation and ransom of prisoners and slaves in pagan, and especially in Mohammedan lands. It was Christian compassion for the weakly and languishing Indians which suggested to the Spanish monk, Las Casas, the unfortunate idea of importing the strong negroes from Africa to work in the American mines. That his idea would develop into the scandalous traffic in the black race, which the history of the three succeeding centuries reveals, the noble monk never suspected (seeSLAVERY).
As to the relief of the poor and sick, a single priest, St. Vincent de Paul (d. 1660), achieved more in all the branches of this work than many cities and states combined. The services of the clergy in general in the exercise of charity cannot here be touched upon (see CHARITY AND CHARITIES). It may however be noted that the famous School of Salerno, the first and most renowned, and for many centuries the only medical faculty in Europe, was founded by the Benedictines, who here laboured partly as practitioners of medicine, and partly to furnish a supply of skilled physicians for all Europe. Of recent pioneers in the domain of charity and social work may be mentioned the Irish "Apostle of Temperance", FatherTheobald Matthew and the German "Father of Journeymen" (Gesellenvater), Kolping.
Intimately related with the morally good is the idea of the true and the beautiful, the object of science and art. At all times the Catholic clergy have shown themselves patrons of science and the arts, partly by their own achievements in these fields and partly by their encouragement and support of the work of others. That theology as a science should have found its home among the clergy was but to be expected. However, the whole range of education lay so exclusively in the hands of the priesthood during the Middle Ages, that the ecclesiastical distinction of clericus (cleric) and laicus (layman) developed into the social distinction of educated and ignorant. But for the monks and clerics the ancient classical literature would have been lost. A medieval proverb ran: "A monastery without a library is a castle without an armory." Hume, the philosopher and historian, says: "It is rare that the annals of so uncultivated a people as were the English as well as the other European nations, after the decline of Roman learning, have been transmitted to posterity so complete and with so little mixture of falsehood and fable. This advantage we owe entirely to the clergy of the Church of Rome, who, founding their authority on their superior knowledge, preserved the precious literature of antiquity from a total extinction" (Hume, "Hist. of England", ch. xxiii, Richard III). Among English historians Gildas the Wise, Venerable Bede, and Lingard form an illustrious triumvirate. The idea of scientific progress, first used by Vincent ofLérins with reference to theology and later transferred to the other sciences, is of purely Catholic origin. The modern maxim, "Education for all", is a saying first uttered by Innocent III. Before the foundation of the first universities, which also owed their existence to the popes, renowned cathedral schools and other scientific institutions laboured for theextension of secular knowledge. The father of German public education is Rhabanus Maurus. Of old centres of civilization we may mention among those of the first rank Canterbury, the Island of Iona, Malmesbury, and York in Great Britain;Paris, Orléans, Corbie, Cluny, Chartres, Toul, and Bec in France; Fulda, Reichenau, St. Gall, and Corvey in Germany. The attendance at these universities conducted by clergymen during the Middle Ages awakens one's astonishment: in 1340 the University of Oxford had no less than 30,000 students, and in 1538, when the German universities were almostdeserted, about 20,000 students, according to Luther, flocked to Paris.

The elementary schools also, wherever they existed, were conducted by priests. Charlemagne had already issued thecapitulary "Presbyteri per villas et vicos scholas habeant et cum summa charitate parvulos doceant", i.e. The priestsshall have schools in the towns and hamlets and shall teach the children with the utmost devotion. The art of printing was received by the whole Church, from the lowest clergy to the pope, as a "holy art". Almost the whole book production of the fifteenth century aimed at satisfying the taste of the clergy for reading, which thus furthered the development of the book trade. Erasmus complained: "The booksellers declare that before the outbreak of the Reform they disposed of 3000 volumes more quickly than they now sell 600" (see Döllinger, "Die Reformation, ihre innereEntwickelung u. ihre Wirkungen", I, Ratisbon, 1851, p. 348. Early Humanism, strongly encouraged by Popes Nicholas Vand Leo X, numbered among its enthusiastic supporters many Catholic clerics, such as Petrarch and Erasmus; the laterHumanistic school, steeped in paganism, found among the Catholic priesthood, not encouragement, but to a great extent determined opposition. Spain's greatest writers in the seventeenth century were priests: Cervantes, Lope deVega, Calderon, etc. At Oxford in the thirteenth century, by their skill in the natural sciences the Franciscans acquired celebrity and the Bishop Grosseteste exercised great influence. The friar, Roger Bacon (d. 1249), was famous for hisscientific knowledge, as were also Gerbert of Rheims, afterwards Pope Silvester II, Albertus Magnus, Raymond Lully, andVincent of Beauvais. Copernicus, canon of Thorn, is the founder of modern astronomy, in which even to the present day the Jesuits especially (e.g. Scheiner, Clavius, Secchi, Perry) have rendered important services. For the first geographicalchart or map we are indebted to Fra Mauro of Venice (d. 1459). The Spanish Jesuit, Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro (d. 1809), is the father of comparative philology; the Carmelite, Paolino di san Bartolomeo, was the author of the first Sanskrit grammar (Rome, 1790). The foundation of historical criticism was laid by Cardinal Baronius (d. 1607), the monksof St. Maur, and the Bollandists. A study of the history of art would reveal a proportionately great number of theapostles of the beautiful in art among the Catholic clergy of all centuries. From the paintings in the catacombs to Fra Angelico and thence to the Beuron school we meet numerous priest, less indeed as practicing artists than as Mæcenases of art. The clergy have done much to justify what the celebrated sculptor Canova wrote to Napoleon I: "Art is underinfinite obligations to religion, but to none so much as the Catholic religion."

The basis on which higher culture finds its secure foundation is material or economic culture, which, in spite of modern technics and machinery, rests ultimately on labour. Without the labourer's energy, which consists in the power and thewill to work, no culture whatever can prosper. But the Catholic priesthood more than any other professional body has praised in word and proved by deed the value and blessing of the labour required in agriculture, mining, and the handicrafts. The curse and disdain, which paganism poured on manual labour, were removed by Christianity. Even anAristotle (Polit., III, iii) could anathematize manual labour as "philistine", the humbler occupations as "unworthy of a freeman". To whom are we primarily indebted in Europe for the clearing away of the primitive forests, for schemes of drainage and irrigation, for the cultivation of new fruits and crops, for the building of roads and bridges, if not to theCatholic monks? In Eastern Europe the Basilians, in Western the Benedictines, and later the Cistercians and Trappists, laboured to bring the land under cultivation, and rendered vast districts free from fever and habitable. Mining and foundries also owe their development, and to some extent their origin, to the keen economic sense of the monasteries. To place the whole economic life of the nations on a scientific foundation, Catholic bishops and priests early laid the basis of the science of national economy--e.g. Duns Scotus (d. 1308), Nicholas Oresme, Bishop of Lisieux (d. 1382), St. Antoninus of Florence (d. 1459), and Gabriel Biel (d. 1495). The Church and clergy have therefore truly endeavoured to carry out in every sphere and in all centuries the programme which Leo XIII in his famous Encyclical "Immortale Dei" of 1 Nov., 1885, declared the ideal of the Catholic Church: "Imo inertiæ desidiæque inimica [Ecclesia] magnopere vult, ut hominum ingenia uberes ferant exercitatione et cultura fructus". The "flight from the world", with which they are so constantly reproached, or the "hostility to civilization", which we hear so often echoed by the ignorant, have never prevented the Church or her clergy from fulfilling their calling as a civilizing agency of the first order, and thus refuting allslanders with the logic of facts.

Maria Virginia Teruel y Leonzon was born on December 30, 1922 in Hermosa, Bataan. Her parents, philanthropist Don Pacifico Leonzon and Doña Timotea Peñaflor – both belong to the wealthy clan of Bataan.

Orphaned by her father who succumbed when Maria Virginia was only one-year old, her youthful mother entrusted her care to Aunt Lelang. Maria Virginia grew up to be an obedient and pious child; nurtured by her family in the Catholic faith.

Even at her teens, Maria Virginia wished to be nun, a dream supported by Hermosa Parish Priest. Rev. Fr. Calilung. But her mother, who took care of her after Aunt Lelang’s death, objected. Doña Timotea arranged for her marriage with Retired Colonel Jose Benedicto Teruel, a man she did not even meet. But, being an obedient daughter, who considers her parents as appointed by God, gave in to the wish of her mother. They were married and begot seven (7) sons and two (2) daughters: Jose Benjamin, Teodoro, Virgilio, Pacifico, Florentino, Antonio, Nenita, Mariza, and Manuel.

But Maria Virginia sacrificed a lot from her husband Jose’s uncontrollable mining ventures. Their fortunes, mainly from her inheritance lost to thin air. Yet, the strong-willed woman whose faith in God and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary sustained her. She continued her charitable work, a legacy left to her by Don Pacifico. She put up the Don Pacifico Leonzon Vocational School Foundation, where young people especially women, were taught employable and livelihood skills. She also established the College of the Holy Trinity, offering from elementary to college education, and where majority of students were enrolled on scholarship; meaning without paying the required tuition fee.

Aware of the need to ensure the strong moral and spiritual foundation in building Christian Faith, she organized the Holy Spirit Apostolic Catholic Cursillo Foundation. The Cursillo Movement, where Catholic faith and strong devotion to the Holy Spirit were the central focus, gained more men and women to the fold of the First International Sacrifice Valley Kilusang Katoliko, Inc. (FISVKKI), which she also organized.

More devotees trooped to Sacrifice Valley and more faithful allowed themselves to be sealed with the name of the angels, saints and holy men and women, as the Holy Spirit blessed Maria Virginia with gifts of healing and prophecy. The Holy Spirit used her as instrument to miraculously heal the sick, make the lame to walk, the deaf to hear, and the blind to see. Even those suffering from abnormalities brought by the evil spirits were exorcised and relieved. In all these healing and counseling sessions, “Mama”, as she is fondly called, saw to it that all those who visit her, especially those who came from far away provinces, are fed and sheltered well. Many of them even decided to stay in Sacrifice Valley and put up their homes in the lots given almost for free by their kind “Mama”. Testimonies by recipients of healing, transformation, and kindness convinced more souls to attend ‘comprohan’- the all-day/ all-night preparatory session prior to the ‘ganapan’ where the name of a saint or holy man/ woman- who shall be the ‘gabay’ is sealed to the deserving convert, and henceforth be addressed as “Apo”.

She was able to foretell fortunes or misfortunes that may befall on those who sought her counsel. And always, she emphasized that repentance of sins, acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord; devotion to the Triune God manifested by the miracles of the Holy Spirit, and sanctification as exemplified by the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints could bring the Merciful Grace of the Almighty.

Miracles of the Holy Spirit –who earlier appeared before her son, Seminarian Florentino L. Teruel inside the compound of the San Jose Major Seminary in Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City and introduced Himself as ‘Mahal na Ingkong’ and the conversion power of the Cursillo Movement, spread throughout the Philippines and abroad. Maria Virginia surged on and held the annual International Block Rosary Convention featuring novenas to the Immaculate Conception and Grand Procession and Holy Mass at the Luneta Grand Stand, Rizal Park, Manila every second week of December. During these big events, all Apo’s – meaning those who were sealed with the holy name, government officials, celebrities, and even leaders of the Inter-faith Sector attended.

In 1992, Maria Virginia got herself a strong partner in her Apostolic Catholic Crusade, when the Holy Spirit, which was hence dearly referred to as ‘Mahal na Ingkong’, caused the establishment of the congregation of the Order of the Missionaries of Holy Spirit (OMHS), headed by her son, + John Florentino Teruel, PP.,PhD. the Patriarch and Founding Bishop of the Apostolic Catholic Church. St. John the Baptist Seminary was also established the same year, and the organization of the OMHS Sisters the following year. The putting up of the Our Lady of Lourdes Formation House was a dream fulfilled for Maria Virginia, who was already referred to as the “Luklukan ng Mahal na Ingkong” (Vessel of the Holy Spirit).

Realizing that these efforts in proclaiming peoples’ need for God, her call for their repentance and acceptance of Christ as Lord, and her invitation to one and all to seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, were not enough, that the “Luklukan ng Mahal na Ingkong” inspired the construction of the “Stations of the Cross” in the Calvary Hill of Sacrifice Valley. These concrete structures vividly portray the suffering of the Savior from the Roman soldiers and enemies, the sacrifices of the grieving Blessed Mother, and the role His Apostles and believers played. With the replicas, the devotees and the faithful were provided, especially during the Holy Week observance, a moving story, with them also interacting, in the story of the passion of Christ and how He gave up His earthly body for the sins of mankind.

On July 30, 2000, upon the prodding and inspiration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in a 5- hectare land, the “Nature’s Basilica” was miraculously built in only two months time. The Basilica which houses 17 giant replicas of the Blessed Mother of Christ’ appearances before holy men and women in different places in several countries, was inaugurated with solemnity. “Nature’s Basilica” included the magnificent images of the Child Jesus- “Senor Noemi”, the imposing monument of the Almighty Father, the portrayal of Jesus in the Garden of Getsemane, and the statues of the archangels guarding each sets of the images of the Blessed Virgin sheltered in a huge mausoleum-like dome. The construction of these massive structures around the mountain slopes by volunteer workers, is a miracle in itself! The “Nature’s Basilica” has since become an attraction to local and foreign tourists and a traditional haven for solemn prayer and devotion for the faithful, who consider the walk to the many steps in the whole Nature’s Basilica, their act of penitence and veneration to the Immaculate Lady. The local government of Bataan recognized this fact and its potential for the tourism development in the area that the Provincial Board declared Sacrifice Valley as its “Pilgrimage Capital”.

All these achievements further inspired the “Luklukan ng Mahal na Ingkong” not to rest in her “glories”, which she all attributed to the Almighty name of the Holy Spirit. Resting for the building of God’s Kingdom, is not in her vocabulary, even as she herself was already suffering from the debilitating kidney disease. She was heard often saying, especially after she met a fatal car accident: “My bones may be pulverized and my whole body may be disabled, but my commitment to serve Mahal na Ingkong could never diminish. Said deadly car accident even strengthened her faith in Mahal na Ingkong, believing that it was Him who saved her. Indeed, what ordinary people thought to be misfortunes, Maria Virginia considered them reasons for her to render more service to God. Such positive outlook and humility are the marks of holy men and women of God.

Earlier, on April 17, 1996, during the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ, the Apostolic Catholic Church, presided by His Holiness, Patriarch John Florentino Teruel, beatified and canonized Maria Virginia as a ”Living Saint”, in obedience to the wishes and instruction of the Holy Spirit- ‘ang Mahal na Ingkong’, and in recognition of her holiness and obedience as “Luklukan ng Mahal na Ingkong”. She had been recognized as the “Living Saint”, not only by those who worked with her, by those who were blessed with healings and transformation by the Holy Spirit, who used her, but also by the saints and angels, who in several instances made manifest their recognition and support of her holy endeavors.

Sta. Maria Virginia joined our Lord God and Savior and the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels, and the saints on May 14, 2005. As she held her last breath, she admonished the clergies and the religious Sisters of the OMHS-ACC and the Apos to help the Patriarch as the Divine Servitude of Mahal na Ingkong, and to support the One and Only Church she honorably built and recognized- the Apostolic Catholic Church. In her Last Will and Testament, Sta. Maria Virginia freely disposed her sacred body to the Rites of the said Holy Church- the ACC. She thanked the Lord for the Grace of Serving Him and wished for her children and co-workers for God’s Kingdom to cherish and to continue her legacy – devotion to Mama Mary and strong faith in the Holy Spirit- ‘ang Mahal na Ingkong’, who is ever-present and helpful to those who are faithful to Him.
